The Grave.
The sincere seeker spends their entire life preparing for death, as they realize that it is merely a bridge, that by crossing it will lead them closer to the Generous One, Al-Muhyi, the Giver of Life and Al-Mumit, the Taker of Life.
Standing transfixed, peering through the massive fence of Jannatul Baqi, touches so deep in the heart. Thousands upon thousands of the most Illustrious Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum, and thousands more respected scholars and pious people gracing this revered ground. At certain times of the day the light appears unwordly, dramatically highlighting the simple rough stones marking the graves which seemed bleached by the centuries of searing heat. Pigeons tirelessly flutter; the sound of their flight to and from the Green Dome creating a muffled tone in an eerie acoustic concerto. The swish of the sweepers’ brooms brushing the excess seed thrown for the birds, into mounds adds to the reverie. The ambience is surreal, pushing one to unusual depths of contemplation. The Sakeenah so tangible, a deafening hush pervades the space.

Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave.
(80:21)
Wherever you are, death will find you out, even if you are in towers built up strong and high!
(4:78)
Every soul shall taste death in the end; to Us shall you be brought back. (29:57)
Say: "The death from which you flee will truly overtake you: then you will be sent back to the Knower of things secret and open: and He will tell you (the truth of) the things that you did!" (62:8)
When the Angel of Death takes away the soul of a person, the Angel asks Allah Ta’ala, ‘Shall I place it with the souls of the mu’mineen believers or with those of the non-believers?’ Insha’Allah we occupy ourselves with this concern, contemplating what command will be given to Malakul Maut when the time for our soul to be extracted is suddenly upon us. Our other concern is whether we are prepared for the trial in the Qabr.
The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam used to seek refuge in Allah Ta’ala from five things; cowardliness, niggardliness, the evils of old age, evil thoughts, and punishment in the grave. And another narration states that Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam used to invoke Allah Ta’ala: "Allahumma ini a’udhu bika min ‘adhabi-l-Qabr, wa min ‘adhabi-nnar, wa min fitnati-l-mahya wa-lmamat, wa min fitnati-l-masih ad-dajjal." (O Allah! I seek refuge with you from the punishment in the grave and from the punishment in the Hell fire and from the afflictions of life and death, and the afflictions of Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal.)
The Best of Mankind SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, the most loved by Allah Ta’ala from His entire creation used to seek refuge from the grave! May we be aware, awake, diligent, obedient, knowing, repentant, remorseful, prepared!
One day when the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam went out from the prayer he saw the people looking as if they were grinning he said, "If you were to keep much in the remembrance of death, which is the cutter-off of pleasures, it would distract you from what I see. Keep much in the remembrance of death which is the cutter-off of pleasure, for a day does not come to the grave without it saying, ‘I am the house of exile, I am the house of solitude, I am the house of dust, I am the house of worms.’ When a believer dies the grave says to him, ‘Welcome and greeting; you are indeed the dearest to me of those who walk upon me. I have been given charge of you today and you have come to me and you will see how I shall treat you.’ It will then expand for him as far as the eye can see and a door to Paradise will be opened for him. But when the disbeliever is buried the grave says to him, `No welcome and no greeting to you; you are the most hateful to me of those who walk upon me. I have been given charge of you today and you have come to me and you will see how I shall treat you.’ Abu Sa’id told that Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam indicated it by interlacing his fingers, demonstrating how the ribs would be squeezed so forcefully they would interlace in a like manner. The earth will be told to press him and continue to press till his ribs are clasped together and he will not be relieved of the torment till Allah Ta’ala resurrects him from his resting-place.
Then he said, "Seventy dragons will be put in charge of him of such a nature that if one of them were to breathe on the earth it would produce no crops as long as the world lasted, and they will bite and scratch him till he is brought to the reckoning." He also reported Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam as saying. "The grave is one of the gardens of Paradise, or one of the pits of Hell."

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar from his father RadhiAllahu anhuma: The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "The deceased is tortured in his grave for the wailing done over him."
Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet passed by a woman who was weeping beside a grave. He told her to fear Allah and be patient. She said to him, "Go away, for you have not been afflicted with a calamity like mine." And she did not recognize him. Then she was informed that he was the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. So she went to the house of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and there she did not find any guard, so she approached him and said, "I did not recognize you." He said, "Verily, patience is at the first stroke of a calamity."
The deceased hears the sound of the footsteps as the people retreat from the burial. He is now left only with his deeds. His wealth and family depart, and at that moment he is asked: O so and so! Who is your Lord, what is your religion, and who is your Prophet? He will reply: My Lord is Allah. My religion is Islam. My Prophet is Muhammad the Messenger of Allah. Who made you aware of this? He will reply: I read Allah’s Book, believed in it, and considered it true; which is verified by Allah’s words:
Allah will keep firm those who believe with a Word that stands firm in this world and in the Hereafter. (14.27)
After the Angels question the believer in the grave and he answers correctly a voice cries out from Heaven that the slave of Allah Ta’ala has spoken the truth, and he will be supplied with delights from Jannah, and clothing from Jannah and a door will open for him as a window into the Jannah, with it’s fragrance and scent filling his grave, and it is expanded as far as the eye can see. Some narrations say it measures seventy cubits by seventy cubits, and the space is illuminated for them. A man with a handsome face, fine clothing and pleasantly perfumed comes to the inhabitant giving them the glad tidings from Allah Ta’ala, of everlasting joy in Gardens Divine. They are told that this is the day you were promised. The deceased asks who they are and are told that this is your righteous good deeds. A door to Jahannam is briefly opened and they are told that this would have been your place had you disobeyed Allah Ta’ala. When they see what is in Jannah, they will say, "O Lord, hasten on the hour." They are told be calm and at ease, and to sleep like a newly wed bride.
When a bride sleeps none other than her beloved awakens her. Similarly, the believer sleeping in their grave will be awakened by none other than his True Beloved, Allah Ta’ala on the Day of Judgement. When the newly wed bride awakens she sees the face of her husband. And when the sincere seeker awakens, Insha’Allah they will behold Allah Ta’ala smiling upon them.
The disbeliever will be subject to the same interrogation, the spirit will be restored to his body, Munkar and Nakeer will arrive, tell him to sit up and pummel him with the same demands. Alas, they do not know. Alas, they do not know. Alas, they do not know. Then a crier will call from Heaven: He has lied, so spread a bed for him from Hell, clothe him from Hell, and open for him a door into Hell. Then some of its heat and pestilential wind will come to him, and his grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will be crushed together. One version adds: One who is blind and dumb will then be placed in charge of him, having a sledge-hammer such that if a mountain were struck with it, it would become dust. He will give him a blow with it which will be heard by everything between the east and the west except by men and jinn, and he will become dust. Then his spirit will be restored to him and the action repeated until the Day of Resurrection. Ya Allah Ya Lateef! Save us all from Your punishment.
It is stated that every one will experience the initial squeezing in the grave, even children. Sa’d RadhiAllahu anhu, for whom the Throne of Allah shook due to reverence, and the doors of Heaven were opened for him with seventy thousand angels participating in his funeral prayer, even his grave was compressed and later on it was expanded for him.
Whenever the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam became free from burying the dead, he used to stay to those present: Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. And he would implore, "O Allah, so and so, son of so and so is in Your protection so guard him from the trial in the grave and in Your nearer presence, so guard him from the trial in the grave and the punishment in Hell. You are faithful and worthy of praise. O Allah, forgive him and show him mercy. You are the Forgiving and the Merciful One."

In ‘La’aali Masnoo’ah it is reported from the riwaayat of Bazzaar, which is not considered concocted, "When a man dies and his relatives are busy in the funeral rites, there stands an extremely handsome man by his head. When the dead body is shrouded, the man slips in between the shroud and the chest of the dead person. When after the burial, the people return home, the two interrogating Angels, Munkar and Nakeer, having black faces and blue eyes come into the grave and try to separate this handsome man so they can question the deceased in privacy about his faith. But the handsome man says that the deceased is his companion and friend and that he will not leave him alone, that he will not leave him until he gets him admitted into Jannah. He explains to the deceased that he is the Qur’an that he used to read sometimes in a loud voice and sometimes in a soft voice, and that after the interrogation you will have no grief, as he will arrange from al-Mala’ul A’laa, the Angels in Jannah, to bring a silk bed filled with musk. May Allah Ta’ala make us diligent with our recitation and bless us with such a favour. Ameen.
Ibn Abbaas RadhiAllahu anhu said once Jibreel alaihis Salam, came to Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam who was looking very worried and sad. Jibreel alaihis Salam asked him why he was so despondent, even though Allah Ta’ala knows whatever is hidden in the hearts. Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam replied to Jibreel alaihis Salam and said that he was worried about his Ummah and how they will be on the Day of Judgement. Jibreel alaihis Salam, further asked, is it about the Muslims or the non-Muslims, to which the Prophet answered, the Muslims. Jibreel alaihis Salam then took Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam to a graveyard where the people of Banu Salama were buried and he struck one grave with his wing and said, "Stand up by the orders of Allah." An extremely handsome man stood up from that grave, reciting,

Jibreel alaihis Salam told him to return to his place which he did. Then he struck another grave with his wing, and out of this grave came an extremely ugly person with a black face and worried eyes, he was saying, "Alas there is nothing but sorrow, shame and horror!" Jibreel alaihis Salam told him to go back to his place, and then explained to Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, "The people will rise up on the Day of Resurrection in the same state that they were at the time of their death."
According to one Hadith, a person who is steadfast in reciting Laa ilaha illa Allah daily they will be raised up with their face shining like a full moon, and Abu Darda RadhiAllahu anhu said that those tongues that remain busy with the Dhikr of Allah Ta’ala will enter Jannah rejoicing! May we be from this group. Ameen.
Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: Once the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, while passing through one of the graveyards of Madinah or Makkah heard the voices of two persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid)." The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then added, "Yes! They are being tortured for a major sin. Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies to make enmity between friends. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave. On being asked why he had done this he replied, "I hope that their torture might be lessened, till these get dried."
Allah’s Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "He who dies of a stomach illness dies as a martyr, or he will be guarded from the trial in the grave, and will have his provision brought him morning and evening from Paradise." And everyone who dies his book of deeds is shut, except one who is protecting the boarders while in Allah Ta’ala’s path, for his deeds will be made to go on increasing till the Day of Resurrection, and he will be safe from the trial in the grave. Also included in this group of ongoing deeds is continuous charity, knowledge which benefits others, and the Du’a of a pious son.
Two noble traditions from our Esteemed Habibullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam convey the advice he desired us to take heed of; Work for your world in proportion to your stay in the world and work for your Hereafter in proportion to your stay in the Hereafter, and O Allah, let me live as a poor man, let me die as a poor man and raise me to life in the Hereafter among the poor.
Narrated Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu: The angel of death was sent to Musa alaihis Salam and when he went to him, Musa alaihis Salam slapped him severely, spoiling one of his eyes. The angel went back to his Lord, and said, "You sent me to a slave who does not want to die." Allah restored his eye and said, "Go back and tell Musa alaihis Salam to place his hand over the back of an ox, for he will be allowed to live for a number of years equal to the number of hairs coming under his hand." So the angel came to him and told him the same. Then Musa alaihis Salam asked, "O my Lord! What will be then?" He said, "Death will be then." He said, "Let it be now." He asked Allah Ta’ala that He bring him near the Sacred Land at a distance of a stone’s throw. Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Were I there I would show you the grave of Musa alaihis Salam by the way near the red sand hill."
After passing away Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani Rahmatullahi alaihi, was asked what happened after he passed away and he was in the grave. He said that when the Angels asked him who was his Lord, he replied, "I am surprised that you have descended so far from the Sidrah al Muntahah and have not forgotten Allah, should it be that I have descended a mere few feet that I should forget everything?" There after Allah Ta’ala opened His gates of Mercy and his grave was transformed into a garden!
All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.

Al Baidaa.
Al Baidaa was a desert area approximately nine kilometers south west from Masjid Nabawi, near Abyar Ali, Dhatul Jaish and Meeqat, (yellow dot).

The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam camped here after the expedition of Bani al Mustaliq. It is also where the verse of tayammum was revealed, and according to another Hadith the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, speaking of future events, said an entire army from Shams on their way to Ka’abah, in their attempt to kill Mahdi, will be swallowed up by the earth at this place.
The incident surrounding the revelation of tayammum is another fascinating chapter in the voluminous books of life in and around Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah. SubhanAllah, Allah Ta’ala, the Most Wise and Most Encompassing Planner!
Aishah RadhiAllahu anha had borrowed a necklace from her sister Asmaa RadhiAllahu anha and was wearing it at the time she was accompanying the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam on one of their journeys back from Al-Baidaa to Madinah. The necklace broke and was lost. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam made his camel kneel down and dismounted and laid his head on the lap of Aishah and slept. People began to search for the necklace but to no avail. Abu Bakr RadhiAllahu anhu came to Aishah RadhiAllahu anha and poked her saying, "You have detained the people because of a necklace." She remained motionless because of the position of Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam on her lap although Abu Bakr RadhiAllahu anhu had hurt her with the slap. When the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam woke up and it was the time for the morning prayer, there was no water to be found at this place and by this time their supplies had run dry. Water was sought, but in vain so they prayed without ablution, then the verse permitting tayammum was revealed.
O you who believe! do not go near prayer when you are intoxicated until you know (well) what you say, nor when you are under an obligation to perform a bath– unless (you are) travelling on the road– until you have washed yourselves; and if you are sick, or on a journey, or one of you come from the privy or you have touched the women, and you cannot find water, betake yourselves to pure earth, then wipe your faces and your hands; surely Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving. (4:43)
O you who believe! when you rise up to prayer, wash your faces and your hands as far as the elbows, and wipe your heads and your feet to the ankles; and if you are under an obligation to perform a total ablution, then wash (yourselves) and if you are sick or on a journey, or one of you come from the privy, or you have touched the women, and you cannot find water, betake yourselves to pure earth and wipe your faces and your hands therewith, Allah does not desire to put on you any difficulty, but He wishes to purify you and that He may complete His favor on you, so that you may be grateful. (5.6)
Aishah RadhiAllahu anha added, "We roused the camel I had been on where we found the necklace under it."
Usaid bin Hudair RadhiAllahu anhu said to Aishah RadhiAllahu anha, "May Allah reward you. By Allah, whenever anything happened which you did not like, Allah brought good for you and for the Muslims in that."
(I have included the above two references to tayammum as both appear in differing Ahadith regarding this revelation, although the majority I read favour it was the Al-Ma’ida verse revealed at this time. And Allah the Almighty knows best.)
The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "I have been given five things which were not given to any one else before me:
- Allah made me victorious by awe, by His frightening my enemies for a distance of one month’s journey.
- The entire earth has been made for me and my followers a place for worship and a means to perform Tayammum, therefore anyone of my followers can pray wherever the time of a prayer is due.
- The booty has been made Halal for me; it was not lawful for anyone else before me.
- I have been given the right of intercession on the Day of Resurrection.
- Every Prophet used to be sent to his nation only but I have been sent to all mankind.
Abu Dharr RadhiAllahu anhu narrates that Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Pure soil will purify a Mu’min even if he does not find water for ten years. When he does find water he should use it." (Tirmidhi)
While mentioning Usaid bin Hudair RadhiAllahu anhu, I couldn’t resist the following.
AbdurRahman ibn Abu Layla RadhiAllahu anhu, quoting Aishah RadhiAllahu anha, that Usaid bin Hudair RadhiAllahu anhu an Ansar, said that while he was given to jesting and was talking to the people and making them laugh, the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam poked him under the ribs with a stick. He said: Let me take retaliation. He said: Take retaliation. He said: You are wearing a shirt but I am not. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then raised his shirt and the man embraced him and began to kiss his side. Then he said: This is what I wanted, Apostle of Allah!
Aishah RadhiAllahu anha said that Usaid bin Hudair RadhiAllahu anhu related that while he was reciting Surat Al-Baqara at night, and his horse was tied beside him, the horse was suddenly startled and troubled. When he stopped reciting, the horse became quiet, and when he started again, the horse was startled again. Then he stopped reciting and the horse became quiet too. He started reciting again and the horse was startled and troubled once again. Then he stopped reciting as his son, Yahya was beside the horse and he was afraid that the horse might trample on him. When he took the boy away and looked towards the sky, he could not see it. The next morning he informed the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam who said, "Recite, O Ibn Hudair! Recite, O Ibn Hudair!" Ibn Hudair RadhiAllahu anhu replied, "O Allah’s Apostle! My son, Yahya was near the horse and I was afraid that it might trample on him, so I looked towards the sky, and went to him. When I looked at the sky, I saw something like a cloud containing what looked like lamps, so I went away in order not to see it." The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Do you know what that was?" Ibn Hudair RadhiAllahu anhu replied, "No." The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Those were Angels who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, they would have remained there till morning when people would have seen them as they would not have disappeared."
All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.

O Majestic Moon
Shyly appearing in your silvery sequined Rajabi shawl.
Lingering in a sky silent to our earthly ears,
but resplendent in the symphony of orbs and
Angels.
Constant in your numinous incantations of the Sovereign Lord.
SubhanAllah SubhanAllah SubhanAllah.
O Chanting Moon
Divulge the secret of this
Enduring glorification.
A misty gossamer veil
Conceals your delight of announcing this
Month of Almighty Allah.
The void is splintered
into a myriad of tiny sparks of light
by the clink of a key you drop
on mirror marble
of my heart.
Inviting.
Enticing me to unlock the accumulated sediment.
Repent, atone
prepare.
O Felicitous Moon,
By His permission
you exude the fragrance of Heaven.
An intoxicating mix of Sidr and Musk,
Seeping earthward.
Mingling with the perfumed pearls ascending from Al Habib Al Mustafa
SallAllahu alaihi wasallam
as his melodious response to your heralding this blessed month
is carried on a scented zephyr
to The Throne of Divinity.
"O Allah, bestow Your grace upon us in Rajab and Sha’ban, and allow us to live into Ramadhan."
O Dignified Moon,
Your delicate wispy crescent,
emitting a shimmering aura of
PEACE, HOPE, STABILITY,
beholds the expectation of pilgrims
amassing around the slender minarets.
Sentinels extending skyward,
as do the outstretched hands,
Cupped,
waiting
to catch
Allah’s unlimited bounties.
Ameen, Ameen, Ameen,
To every prayer recited every second every where.
Ameen, Ameen, Ameen.
O Compassionate Moon,
As I glance at you
wiping your countenance
with a passing cloud,
A splash of tear falls on my cheek.
Falling falling falling
From your sobbing
as a shooting star.
Mingling with the copious weeping
Of the bereft Ummah.
May our lamenting
Be answered
Cultivating golden bursts of
Unity.
O Virtuous Moon,
A suspended ship
Sailing the vast oceans of the sky,
smuggling our awe and wonder.
While captives in your graceful embrace
we ponder the Greatness of Our Creator.
Release your clasp as
I am ready to forsake my all.
Surrendering
To the Owner of your Rajab cycle.
All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.

The Trench, Khandaq.
When they came upon you from above you and from below you, and when the eyes grew wild, and the hearts reached to the throats, and you were harbouring doubts about Allah. There the believers were tried and shaken with violent shaking. (33:10-11)
O those who believe, remember Allah’s favour to you, when the forces (of infidels) came upon you, and We sent upon them a wind, and the forces (of angels) you did not see. And Allah is watchful of what you do. (33:9)
Such powerful, universal Words from our Lord, The Almighty!
This decisive battle and all that it signified at the time for the Muslims in Madinah, reveals relevant lessons for the turmoil prevalent in so many places today. May Allah Ta’ala guide the Ummah the same way He guided the valiant Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum through the exemplary actions of the Prophet SallAllau alaihi wasallam. May we learn from the admirable qualities of obedience, submission and surrender to the Commands of Allah Ta’ala for the solution to the trials Allah Ta’ala has deemed to test us with now. The first words the Prophet SallAllau alaihi wasallam uttered upon hearing of the impending battle were:
Allah is enough for us, He is the best protector. (3:173)
May our hearts echo these words, reverberating into our deeds and actions. Ameen.
Hope and optimism never left the actions of our Honourable Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam throughout this grueling ordeal. Days, some narrations say weeks, of digging the trench in extreme weather conditions and with the barest of equipment, most digging with bare hands and carrying the dirt on their backs. The Prophet SallAllau alaihi wasallam was aware of their emotional fragility, injecting the arduous task with determination and zeal. They worked side by side, reciting verses of poetry and verses from the Qur’an.
"O Allah, were it not for you,
We would not have been guided,
Nor would we have given charity, nor prayed.
So bestow on us calmness,
And when we meet the enemy,
Then make our feet firm, for indeed,
The enemy has revolted against us;
Yet if they want to afflict us
We oppose their affliction".
Allahumma lawlaa Anta mahtadaynaa
Wa laa tasaddaqnaa walaa sallaynaa
Fa anzilan sakeenatan ‘alaynaa
Wa thabbitil aqdaama in laaqaynaa
Innal a’daa‘a qad baghaw ‘alaynaa
Idhaa araadu fitnatan abaynaa
The Prophet SallAllau alaihi wasallam used to raise his voice emphasizing the final phrase, "Abayna! Abayna! (We oppose their affliction.)
And would constantly be making this Du’a:
O Allah there is no welfare except that of the Hereafter; Shower Your Grace on the Ansars and the Muhajirs.
The Muslims numbered 3,000, with a paltry 36 horses! Compared to an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 of the enemy. The strategies adopted by Rasulullah SallAllau alaihi wasallam denote his masterly leadership tactics, employing the unique idea of a ditch from Salman Farsi RadhiAllahu anhu, along with constant consulting with his Companions RadhiAllahu anhum. The site for the trench was demarcated by the Prophet SallAllau alaihi wasallam. He allotted ten yards of trench to be dug by each party of ten persons, reports outlining that the Muhajiroun were assigned the northern section finishing towards Mount Uhud, while the section nearer mount Sal’a was entrusted to the more numerous Ansar. It is said that the ditch was about three and a half miles long and some ten yards wide and five yards deep.

This is an approximation of the position and length of the trench. The mauve dot represents the command centre for the operation. Masjid Nabawi in the middle at the bottom.
Aishah RadhiAllahu anha, narrated that Rasulullah SallAllau alaihi wasallam while striking at the invincible rock he recited:
The words of your Lord are complete in their truth and justice. Nothing can change His words, He is the All hearing, the All Knowing. (6:115)
A pertinent reminder that the recitation of this verse is a tested prescription for the resolution of something difficult.
The trial of the siege, lasting more than three weeks, tested their resolve even more. The Tafseer in Ma’ariful Qur’an elucidates the details.
I share the following events, highlighting the role of women at the time. A previous post dealt with the wife of Jabir ibn Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu, while the story of the daughter of Basheer ibn S’ad RadhiAllahu anhu tells of another of the miracles Allah Ta’ala aided His faithful with.
Amrah bint Raa’hah RadhiAllahu anha, the wife of Basheer, sent her young daughter with a handful of dates, which she folded in her garment, to give to her father and her uncle, Abdullah ibn Rawaahah for their meal. While she was looking for them she passed by Rasulullah SallAllau alaihi wasallam who beckoned her to go to him. He inquired what she had, and when she said a few dates he asked for them. She put them in the Prophet SallAllau alaihi wasallam ’s hands, saying that they did not even fill his hands. He then asked for a sheet to be spread out and the dates to be scattered over it, then he called for the people of the trenches to come and partake of a meal. Everyone arrived and began eating from the dates, which continued to increase in number. After all had eaten to their fill, the dates were still falling over the edges of the sheet!
The Prophet SallAllau alaihi wasallam saw Umm Sulaym RadhiAllahu anha carrying a dagger and he asked her what she was doing with it. She said: "It is to fight those who desert." This along with the courageous story of Saffiyah RadhiAllahu anha, the aunt of the Prophet SallAllau alaihi wasallam are clear evidence that women contributed in this campaign.
There were some light moments amidst the fervour. The youth allowed to participate were enthusiastic and competed with each other. Zaid ibn Thabit RadhiAllahu anhu was a teenager at the time, who became tired after the incessant work, one day, fell asleep. The mirthful ‘Umarah ibn Hazm RadhiAllahu anhu noticed this and took his clothes and tools and hid them as a joke. Naturally when Zaid RadhiAllahu anhu woke he was terrified. When the Prophet SallAllau alaihi wasallam heard of this trick he chided Zaid RadhiAllahu anhu by naming him "Sleepy" (Abu Ruqad, the sleepy one) and mildly rebuked ‘Umarah RadhiAllahu anhu.
Once the announcement of victory had been made it is said that many of the Companions being so exhausted sleep in the streets of Madinah on their way home! No sooner had Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam returned home, put down his arms and had taken a bath when Jibreel Alaihis Salam, whose head was covered with dust, came to him saying, "You have put down your arms! By Allah, I have not put down my arms yet." Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Where to go now?" Jibreel Alaihis Salam said, "This way," pointing towards the tribe of Bani Qurayzah. Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam without hesitation gathered the Sahabah once again and immediately went out towards them. SubhanAllah!

1. Masjid Fath (also known as Al-Ahzab and Al-Ala) The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s tent was pitched at this high point of the mountain, and this is where he supplicated Allah Ta’ala for victory for three days.
From amongst the Du’a was:
"O Allah, Revealer of the Book, swift in taking account, put the confederates to rout. O Lord, defeat them and shake them."
On the third day after Zuhr Jibreel was sent to him with the glad tidings of victory.

The Shepherd.

A mere ten minute drive from Haram will bring you to the peripheral nomadic farmers. Their temporary "homes" constructed of all sorts of recycled materials, including packing cases, cardboard, frayed pieces of canvas and discarded fabrics. The shelters for their animals mimic their homes! Such a rugged lifestyle at the foot of rugged rock mountains, a rugged awesome beauty of sorts. The weather beaten, gnarled features of these farmers and their families blend with the harsh terrain. An ambience of transience pervades these clusters of animal husbandry. Perpetual lessons of this mortal life sculpt the essence of their being. SubhanAllah, how I sometimes envy how their lot will be on the Day of Qiyamah when they will be required to render their account; maybe seconds to describe their possessions and the simplicity of their existence. Allahu ‘Alum. Their endurance in the intense summer heat is beyond my comprehension! Water has to be carted in and stored in metal tanks, solar heated! Wood and dung for cooking. A natural sparkling star-studded ceiling in the bathroom! Such conditions reflect how for centuries people survived in and around Madinah, and all over the Kingdom. The presence of the lonely shepherd attending his, and sometimes her, flock is quite common, astride a camel or a donkey amidst hundreds of sheep or goats or camels.
The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said that all of Allah Ta’ala’s prophets shepherded sheep at some stage during their mission. His Companions RadhiAllahu anhu asked him, "Did you do the same?" The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam replied, "Yes, I used to shepherd the sheep of the people of Makkah for some Qirats."
Working as a shepherd allowed the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam to work in peace and quiet, to enjoy the beauty of the desert, and to contemplate the wonders and magnificence of Allah Ta’ala’s creation. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam through his experience of being a shepherd learnt and developed many wonderful qualities which assisted him in leading the Ummah. A shepherd is busy taking care of his flock from sunrise till sunset. A life of ease, comfort and luxury are unknown to the shepherd. Long days in the intense heat with the most basic of course food, requires maximum patience, an attribute necessary for a good leader. The very nature of herding a flock requires humbleness. Serving, supervising, guarding and sleeping in close proximity to the animals are the daily duties, contributing to ridding oneself of pride and arrogance. The desert harbours an array of natural enemies to the flock, with various wild predatory animals to be aware of and face, so bravery is another characteristic instilled in the shepherd. Mercy and compassion for all the creation of Allah Ta’ala is paramount, along with the honourable satisfaction of earning a lawful income. And thus is the legacy of all prophets seen in these humble settings.
Allah Ta’ala says in one Hadith Qudsi, Your Lord delights at a shepherd who, on the peak of a mountain crag, gives the call to prayer and prays. Then Allah Almighty says: Look at this servant of Mine, he gives the call to prayer and performs the prayers; he is in awe of Me. I have forgiven My servant and have admitted him to Paradise.
SubhanAllahu, such a blessing!
The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Verily Shaytan is the wolf of a man just as the wolf is the enemy of a flock. He seizes the solitary sheep going astray from the flock or going aside from the flock. So avoid the branching paths; it is essential for you to remain along with the community.
And another narration he SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: If there are three men in a village or in the desert among whom prayer is not offered in congregation, the devil has got the mastery over them. So observe prayer in congregation, for the wolf only eats only the straggling animal.
Profound messages in these few lines, may we all ponder on such wisdom.

Wahab bin Qabus RadhiAllahu anhu was a shepherd who lived in a village near Madinah. To think that maybe some of these places were once home to the Sahabah shepherds jolts the heart! One day he came to Madinah to see the Holy Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. He was accompanied by his nephew, and his herd of goats. In Madina, Wahab came to know that the Holy Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam had left for Uhud where he was fighting against the Quraysh. He left his nephew and his goats at Madina, and himself proceeded to Uhud. When he reached Uhud, the battle was at its thickest. A group of the Quraysh was at the time advancing to attack the Holy Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. It was a critical situation, and turning to his Companions RadhiAllahu anhum the Holy Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: "He who disperses these people will be my companion in the Paradise." Hearing the call, Wahab RadhiAllahu anhu rushed at the advancing Quraysh. Some were killed and the rest scattered. The Holy Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam watched Wahab RadhiAllahu anhu overpower the Quraysh group single handed. When Wahab RadhiAllahu anhu after the flight of the Quraysh came to the Holy Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, he was given the tidings of Paradise. Wahab RadhiAllahu anhu was intoxicated with pleasure at these tidings. As soon as he heard this, he took his sword, and rushed to the enemy line. Killing right and left he penetrated deep into the enemy line. He was surrounded by the enemy on all sides. He received many wounds but he went on playing havoc in the ranks of the enemy. The blood flowed profusely from his wounds, and then he fell dead on the battle-field. When the battle was over, and the Muslims collected the dead bodies of all the martyrs, the Holy Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam stood by his dead body and said: "O Wahab, you have pleased me. May Allah be pleased with you." Although the Holy Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam was himself wounded, he led the funeral prayer of Wahab RadhiAllahu anhu, and put him in the grave with his own hands. Umar RadhiAllahu anhu who was present said that in the battle of Uhud none surpassed Wahab RadhiAllahu anhu in bravery. Thereafter Umar RadhiAllahu anhu used to say often: "I never envied anybody more than Wahab. I wish I could appear before Allah with a record as good as his."
Narrated Unais bin ‘Amr RadhiAllahu anhu: Ahban bin Aus said, "I was amongst my sheep. Suddenly a wolf caught a sheep and I shouted at it. The wolf sat on its tail and addressed me, saying, ‘Who will look after the sheep when you will be busy and not able to look after it? Do you forbid me the provision which Allah has provided me?’ Ahban added, "I clapped my hands and said, ‘By Allah, I have never seen anything more curious and wonderful than this!’ On that the wolf said, ‘There is something more curious and wonderful than this; that is, Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam is over there amongst palm trees, inviting people to Allah ‘ " Unais bin ‘Amr RadhiAllahu anhu further said, "Then Ahban went to Allah’s Apostle and informed him what happened and embraced Islam."
And finally a slightly related moral.
Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "There were two women with whom there were their two sons. A wolf came and took away the son of one of them. That lady said to her companion, ‘The wolf has taken your son.’ The other said, ‘But it has taken your son.’ So both of them sought the judgment of the Prophet Daoud alaihis Salam who judged that the boy should be given to the older lady. Then both of them went to the Prophet Sulaiman alaihis Salam, son of Daoud alaihis Salam and informed him of the case. Sulaiman alaihis Salam said, ‘Give me a knife so that I may cut the child into two portions and give one half to each of you.’ The younger lady said, ‘Do not do so; may Allah bless you! He is her child.’ On that, he gave the child to the younger lady." Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu remarked after he heard Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam tell this story, "By Allah! I had never heard the word "Sakkin" as meaning knife, except on that day, for we used to call it ‘Mudya.’ "
"All of you are shepherds, and each one is responsible for his flock. A leader of the people is a shepherd and responsible for them. A man is like a shepherd over his family, and he is responsible for his flock. A woman is like a shepherd over her husband’s house and children, and she is responsible for them. And a slave is a guardian of his master’s property and is responsible for it. So all of you are guardians and are responsible for your charges."
Such a moving Hadith.
O Allah, make us all responsible shepherds. Ameen.
All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.

O Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the great Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things. I seek forgiveness from You from my sins and I seek Your mercy.
O Allah, I invoke Your perfect words, from which no person, good or bad, can escape, for protection against any evil that may descend from the sky, or ascends up to it; and any evil that is scattered on the earth or springs from it, and from the mischief of every calamity befalling upon the Ummah of Your Beloved Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.
O Allah, be a Caretaker for me against the mischief of all Your creation, whose control is in Your Hands. Your protection is indeed strong and Your Name is full of blessings.
O Allah, You are the First and nothing precedes You, and You are the Last and nothing will remain after You, You are the Obvious and nothing is above You, You are the Latent and nothing is beyond You.
O Allah, You are mightier than Your entire creation, You are mightier than what I fear. Your praise is high; the one who seeks protection in You, always remains honoured.
O Allah, I seek protection from severe trials, unfortunate disasters, undue feeling of frustration over Your Decrees, over the mischief of things which I do, and the things which I do not do. I seek your protection from the mischief of the things I know, and the things which I do not know.
O Allah, I seek Your protection from my being deprived of Your Grace and peace, and all circumstances which are likely to provoke Your wrath.
O Allah, I seek Your protection from oppressing others or being oppressed by others.
O Allah, Lord of Jibreel, Mikaeel, Israfeel and Lord of Ibrahim, Ismail and Ishaaq, grant me safety and do not let anyone of Your creation whom I cannot fight have the better of me.
O Allah, unite out hearts and set aright our mutual affairs, guide us to the path of peace, liberate us from the darkness by Your Light, save us from obscene practices whether hidden or open, bless us in our ears, eyes, hearts, spouses and children and accept our repentance; verily You are Oft-returning, Merciful; and grant us that we may be grateful to You and full of praise for You and Your bounty and that we may welcome it and be pleased to fulfill Your bounty for us.
O Allah, I beg of You all good things which had been asked for by Your Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, and seek Your protection from all things which Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam had asked protection from You.
O Allah, through the intermediary of that right which Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam enjoys by You, remove from the creation all calamities which has befallen them. And do not set over them such a person who has no mercy for them. Because at present such a calamity has befallen on them that none except You are able to remove it.

Stellar Sahabah, Umar ibn Khattab RadhiAllahu anhu.
Umar RadhiAllahu anhu was a true ascetic. He withheld and limited his reliance on the transient comforts. He preferred hardships over convenience, and uncompromisingly sought the everlasting solace of the Hereafter. His words of wisdom are a truthful mirror of a true believer who has submitted and dedicated his body, mind and soul to the privilege of serving his Lord. When Umar RadhiAllahu anhu embraced Islam, the spirit of the believers was uplifted, and he brought about a new clarity and determination to defend the divine revealed message of Allah Ta’ala. From that day on the perfidy of the unbelievers was heavily shaken, the weight of their numbers no longer influenced the balance of power, and their ignoble plots were openly challenged. May this legacy live on in the hearts of the entire Ummah. May we regain such strength as personified in this Wise Caliph, as to shake all oppressors. May his actions that once filled the Madinah air with such noble and honourable qualities, influence our contemporary lives, giving truth and justice the same impact they had through Umar RadhiAllahu anhu and his contribution to the glory of Islam.
The Prophet said SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, "None of you believes until he loves me more than he loves his children, his parents, and all people." He also said: "None of you believes until he loves me more than he loves himself."
One day Omar RadhiAllahu anhu went for a walk with the Prophet of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam took Omar’s hand, and Omar RadhiAllahu anhu said, “By Allah, I love you O Prophet of Allah”. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then asked him, “More than your children, O Omar?” Omar RadhiAllahu anhu replied, “Yes, O Prophet of Allah.” The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then asked him, “More than your family, O Omar?” Omar RadhiAllahu anhu replied, “Yes, O Prophet of Allah.” The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then asked him, “More than your money, O Omar?” Omar RadhiAllahu anhu replied, “Yes, O Prophet of Allah.” The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then asked him, “More than yourself, O Omar?” Omar RadhiAllahu anhu replied, “No, O Prophet of Allah.” The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “O Omar, your faith will never be complete until you love me more than yourself.”
So Omar RadhiAllahu anhu went away and stayed alone for a while, then he came back and stood in the middle of the mosque saying loudly, “O Prophet of Allah, now I love you more than myself.” The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then replied, “Now, O Omar. Now, O Omar.” (Meaning that now Omar’s faith is complete.) Omar RadhiAllahu anhu was later asked how he could make himself love the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam more than himself in such a short time. He replied, “I went out and asked myself whom I needed more, myself or the Prophet of Allah? I found that I needed the Prophet more. I will not intercede for myself on the Day of Judgment, but the Prophet of Allah will. My deeds will not place me in the highest of levels, but my love for the Prophet will. I did not take myself from the darkness to light, but the Prophet of Allah did. Hence, the love of the Prophet fell in my heart more than my love for myself." SubhanAllah.
Umar RadhiAllahu anhu one night went in disguise with his companion Ibn Abbas RadhiAllahu anhu to check the condition of the people on the outskirts of Madinah. They strolled from one quarter to another. At last they came to a tribe where very poor people lived. While passing by a small hut, the Caliph overheard voices from inside. A mother was telling her daughter that the amount fetched by her that day on account of the sale of milk was very little. She told her that when she was young, and used to sell milk, she always mixed water with milk, and that led to considerable profit. She advised her daughter to do the same.
The girl said, "You diluted milk, when you were not a Muslim. Now that we are Muslims, we cannot dilute milk." The mother said that Islam did not stand in the way of her diluting the milk. The daughter said, "Have you forgotten the Caliph’s order? He wants that the milk should not be diluted" The mother said, "But the Caliph has forgotten us. We’re so poor, what else should we do but dilute milk in order to survive?" The daughter said "Such living would not be lawful, and as a Muslim I would not do anything which is against the orders of the Caliph, and whereby other Muslims are deceived."
The mother said, "But there is neither the Caliph nor any of his officers here to see what we do. Daughter you are still a child. Go to bed now and tomorrow I will myself mix the milk with water for you."
The girl refused to fall in with the plan of her mother. She said, "The Caliph may or may not be here, but his order is order, and it must be obeyed. My conscience is my Caliph. You may escape the notice of the Caliph and his officers, but how can we escape the notice of Allah and our own conscience?" Thereupon the mother remained quiet. The lamp was extinguished and the mother and the daughter went to sleep.
The next day, Umar RadhiAllahu anhu sent a man to purchase milk from the girl. The milk was undiluted. The girl had kept her resolve. Umar RadhiAllahu anhu turned to Ibn Abbas RadhiAllahu anhu and said, "The girl has kept her resolve in spite of the demands of her mother. She deserves a reward. What reward should I give her?"
"She should be paid some money" said Ibn Abbas RadhiAllahu anhu. Umar said, "Such a girl would become a great mother. Her integrity is not to be weighed with a few coins; it is to be measured in the scale of national values. I shall offer her the highest award in my gift, and which shall also be in the highest interest of the nation."
The Caliph summoned the daughter and the mother to his court. The mother trembled as she stood before the mighty ruler. But the girl faced Umar RadhiAllahu anhu with a calm repose. She was beautiful, and there was an impressive dignity about her.
Then before the gathering, Umar RadhiAllahu anhu related how he had overheard the mother and the daughter, and how in spite of the pleads of the mother the daughter had kept he resolve.
Someone suggested that the mother should be taken to task. The Caliph said that ordinarily he would have punished the mother, but he had forgiven her for the sake of her daughter. Turning to the girl Umar RadhiAllahu anhu said, "Islam needs daughters like you, and as a Caliph of Islam I wish to reward you by owning you as a daughter".
The Caliph called his sons, and addressing them said "Here is a gem of a girl who would make a great mother. I desire that one of you should take this girl as wife. I know of no better bride than this girl of sterling character. In matters of wedlock, it should be the character, and not the stature in life that should count."
Abdullah and Abdur Rahman RadhiAllahu anhuma the elder sons of Umar RadhiAllahu anhu were already married. Asim RadhiAllahu anhu the third son was unmarried, so he offered to marry the girl. Thereupon with the consent of the milkmaid and her mother Asim RadhiAllahu anhu was married to the girl, and the milkmaid became the daughter-in-law of the Caliph.
From this union was born a daughter Umm Asim, who became in due course the mother of Umar bin Abdul Aziz, who later became a Caliph.
While other Caliphs of the Umayyad dynasty lived in luxury, Umar bin Abdul Aziz upheld standards of austerity and simplicity following in the footsteps of Umar the second Caliph of Islam. It is said that if ever there was a noble Caliph after the ‘Rightly Guided Caliphs’, such a man was Umar bin Abdul Aziz. He inherited the noble qualities of the milkmaid who married the Caliph’s son, and those of Umar Farooq RadhiAllahu anhu who had the eye to discern the noble and honest qualities in a poor girl.
Another incident when Umar RadhiAllahu anhu was anonymously traveling around the environs of Madinah, dressed in his usual old and tattered clothes he came upon a young shepherd tending his flock. Umar RadhiAllahu anhu requested that he milk one of the sheep so he could satisfy his thirst. He offered the young boy money for the milk.
The shepherd said he would willingly give him a drink, but the sheep were not his, they were entrusted to him by the owner and he did not have the owner’s permission to offer any milk to any body.
Umar RadhiAllahu anhu being the wise guardian of his people took the opportunity to test this young boy suggesting that he sell him one of the sheep so he could milk it and then slaughter it later if necessary, while the shepherd profits from the money Umar RadhiAllahu anhu was prepared to pay him. He offered the shepherd an explanation for the missing sheep suggesting he tell the owner that a wolf had eaten one of the flock, that nobody would know the truth. The young shepherd exclaimed, "What about Allah?" Such love and fear and strength of Yaqeen!
Umar RadhiAllahu anhu once was wearing a new shirt, which he considered had sleeves that were too long. He called upon his son Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu to trim the sleeves with a blade, instructing him to place his forefingers across the edge of his knuckles, cutting the excess length. Ibn Umar RadhiAllahu anhu cut the sleeves accordingly, but remarked that it looked untidy with the fabric unraveling. He offered to hem the sleeves, but Umar RadhiAllahu anhu insisted they remain like that as he had seen Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam wear sleeves like that. Abdullah ibn Umar RadhiAllahu anhu reported that his father RadhiAllahu anhu kept on wearing that shirt, even though threads dangled from the sleeves and the hem.
Many narrations tell that Umar’s RadhiAllahu anhu dress had as many as twelve patches on it, with some of the patches sewn on the top of others!
Hafsa RadhiAllahu anha, his daughter, and one of the blessed wives of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam one day said to him, "O Commander of the Faithful, There is no harm if you wear a better dress than this, and eat more wholesome food, because Allah Ta’ala has provided you amply." He replied, "Don’t you remember what Allah’s Messenger and Abu Bakr used to suffer?" he started to mention them until she wept. He continued, "By Allah, if I can share with them some of the hardships in the world, perhaps I could share with them some of their comfort in the Hereafter."
Salim ibn Abdullah narrated that Umar RadhiAllahu anhu said, "By Allah, we do not care much for the pleasures of this world. We ask for the most inferior of goats to be prepared for food when we are hungry, and we ask for wheat husk and oats’ pith to be grounded for our bread, and we prefer raisins for our vinegar. We want to save our pleasures and comfort for the Hereafter, for we have heard Allah Almighty say:
You have wallowed in your satisfaction during your life in the world and sought comfort therein. (46:20)
Another time, Umar RadhiAllahu anhu was walking along with some of the Companions RadhiAllahu anhum when they passed a rubbish dump. Umar RadhiAllahu anhu stood there for a moment pondering, which disturbed the Companions RadhiAllahu anhum. When he noticed that they were offended by the stench, he commented, "This is the world you care so much about to hoard, and this is the outcome of what you trust the most and rely upon your needs!"
During the drought year, Hijrah 18, known as the "Year of the Ashes" Umar RadhiAllahu anhu vowed not to eat meat, butter and other delicious meals until the calamity lifted. Once when he was extremely hungry, and his stomach was rumbling he was seen to tap on his stomach with his finger saying, "It does not matter if you rumble or not. You will only receive oil when life returns to normal."
One day he saw a fat camel for sale in the market. Upon inquiry he was told that it belonged to Abdullah, his son. So he went to him and asked how the camel became so fat. Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu explained that after he originally purchased it was so thin so he put it in the government grazing ground where it became healthy, so he thought he would sell it for a good profit. Umar reprimanded him saying that seeing it became fat while in the governments ground that he could only retain a very small amount of the money from the sale and the bulk of it was to be deposited in the Baitul Maal!
Another story relays that once a supply of ambergris and musk reached Madinah from Bahrain, and he needed to find someone who knew how to weigh and measure the scents into containers. Atika bint Zaid RadhiAllahu anha, his wife offered to do that. Umar RadhiAllahu anhu told her, "I would not ask you to do this job because while performing this work if some scent sticks to your hands, I am afraid that some may rub onto your clothing, meaning I may be receiving more than my share than others in the community."
Some of Umar RadhiAllahu anhu ’s words of piety and wisdom;
"Patience is the healthiest ingredient of our life."
"You must know that greed means poverty, despair means wealth. When a man gives up hope in having something, he means that he no longer needs it, and hence, abundance connotes absence of need."
"My heart was mellowed in Allah to the degree that it became softer than butter, and it was steeled in Allah to the degree that it became harder than rock."
"I would have loved to have already met my Lord had it not been for three blessings in this world. That is: One, to prostrate my forehead on the ground before Him. Two, to sit in gatherings that favour the good word, which is like opting for the better dates on a platter and three, for the opportunity to fight in His cause, to proclaim His Word, and to establish His religion on earth."
"Wintertime is an auspicious time for worshippers."
"Weigh your actions before they are weighed, and reckon yourselves before you are reckoned, this will make it easier for you tomorrow. Adorn yourselves for the grand exhibition:
On the day, you will be displayed for judgement, and all your secrets will be brought to light. (69:18)"
Umar RadhiAllahu anhu knew of his martyrdom, as he was foretold by Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. He was once heard to say in prostration, "Lord, Thy will be done, I pray that Thou will not let my murder be at the hands of a servant who prostrated himself even once before Thee, so that his prostration will not be in his favour on the Day of Judgement." He died from the wound he suffered from a poisonous dagger of a traitorous Magian.
Peace be on you, Amir of the believers, Umar ibn Khattab, whom the Messenger of Allah said about him, "He is the lamp of the People in Paradise," and "Never the sun rises onto anyone better than Umar."
Peace be on you, who administered justice, and said what was right. Peace be on you, who was the father of the weak and destitute, the widows and orphans. We beseech Allah Ta’ala to bestow on to you, the best reward for what you have done for the nation of the Messenger of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.
All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.

SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who chooses who is sick and who is healthy?
And distributes loans to the poor or wealthy?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who gives us tongues to talk?
And legs with feet so we can walk?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who decrees when there is war or peace?
And decides when all horror will cease?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who blessed us with the Best of Creation?
And honoured us to be of his nation?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
So surely to Allah we pray,
And only to Him we obey.
May He guide us to His Commands,
So we can truly understand,
That everything is in His hand.
And that His Way is magnificently
GRAND!

Banu Haraam.
The tribe of Banu Haraam had the honour of such a title indicating that their wealth and dignity were forbidden upon their enemy. They consisted of children from a man from the Bani Salamah tribe, who resided near the present day Masjid Qiblatain. The Banu Haraam was located on the western side of Mount Sal’a. (purple dot)

A short distance from where they resided, up the steep slopes of Mount Sal’a is an old dome construction marking a cave where Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam would retreat during the nights of the Battle of Khandaq. (yellow dot) We have been told that he received a revelation at this place, but as yet have not learnt what it may have been. Our search is ongoing, Insha’Allah, we find the right Alim to enlighten us.
There are many inspiring incidents related to the Banu Haraam. Abdullah bin Haraam RadhiAllahu anhu was a prominent figure in this tribe. He was the father of Jabir RadhiAllahu anhu, who is the narrator of many Ahadith and who accompanied the Prophet on many expeditions.
Abdullah bin Haraam RadhiAllahu anhu was the first martyr of Uhud. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said to Jabir bin Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu upon the death of his father, "Allah gave life to your father and openly conversed with him without a veil, and He has never conversed with any one except from behind a veil, and He said to him, ‘O Abdullah, desire and I shall grant thee.’ He asked, ‘Oh my Lord, return me to the world that I may again be martyred in your cause.’ Allah said, ‘I have decreed that none shall be returned.’ Abdullah then said, ‘So inform those whom I have left behind.’ Thus Allah revealed the following verse:
"Think not of those who are slain in Allah’s way as dead. Nay, they live, with their Lord they have provision." (3:169)
Jabir bin Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu once fell ill and he had seven sisters (some narrations say nine). The Apostle of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam came to him and blew on his face, reviving him. He asked Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, "O Apostle of Allah, may I not bequeath one-third of my property to my sisters?" He replied: "Do good." I asked: "Half?" He replied: "Do good." He then turned to leave me, and said: "I do not think, Jabir, you will die of this disease. Allah has revealed verses and described the share of your sisters. He appointed two-thirds for them." Jabir RadhiAllahu anhu used to say: This verse was revealed about me:
They ask you (O Prophet) for a ruling. Say: Allah gives you a ruling about inheritance from someone who dies childless with no surviving parents. (4:176)
Jabir bin Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu said, "I accompanied the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam on one of the expeditions. When we were returning the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, ‘Whoever wants to return earlier to his family, should hurry up.’ We set off and I was on a black red tainted camel having no defect, and the people were behind me. But then the camel stopped suddenly because of exhaustion. On that the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said to me, ‘O Jabir, wait!’ Then he hit it once with his lash and it started moving at such a fast pace that I had to hold it back from going ahead of Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. He then said, ‘Will you sell the camel?’ I replied in the affirmative. When we reached Medina, and the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam went to the Masjid along with his companions. I, too, went to him after tying the camel on the pavement at the Masjid gate. Then I said to him, ‘This is your camel.’ He came out and started examining the camel and saying, ‘The camel is ours.’ Then the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam sent an amount of gold with Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu saying, ‘Give it to Jabir.’ Then he asked, ‘Have you taken the full price of the camel?’ I replied in the affirmative. He said SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, ‘Both the price and the camel are for you.’ SubhanAllah!
Jabir ibn Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu was the one to whom the Messenger of Allah, SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Before you sleep, lock the door, tie the waterskin, turn the vessel over or cover it, and put out the lamp. Shaytan does not open a locked door or untie a tied knot, or uncover a vessel, but a mouse may set fire to people’s houses about them."
Jabir bin ‘Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu also said, "Once a big pot containing cooked vegetables was brought. On finding unpleasant smell coming from it, the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam asked, ‘What is in it?’ He was told all the names of the vegetables that were in it. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam ordered that it should be brought near to some of his companions who were with him. When the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam saw it he disliked to eat it and said, ‘Eat. I don’t eat from it for I converse with those whom you don’t converse with (the angels).’ The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, ‘Whoever eats garlic or onion should keep away from our mosque or should remain in his house.’
Once Jabir ibn Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu was sitting in his mosque. He said: The Apostle of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam came to us in this mosque and he had a twig of date-palm of the kind of Ibn Tab. He SallAllahu alaihi wasallam looked and saw phlegm on the wall towards qiblah. He SallAllahu alaihi wasallam turned to it and scraped it with the twig. He then said: Who of you likes that Allah turns His face from him? He further said: When any of you stands for praying, Allah faces him. So he should not spit before him, nor on his right side. He should spit on his left side under his left foot. If he is in a hurry, needs to spit immediately, he should do with his cloth in this manner. He SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then placed the cloth on his mouth and rubbed it off. He SallAllahu alaihi wasallam then said: Bring perfume. A young man of the tribe stood and hurried to his house and returned with perfume in his palm. The Apostle of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam took it and put it at the end of the twig. He then rubbed the mark of phlegm with it. Jabir RadhiAllahu anhu said: This is the reason you use perfume in your mosques.
The blue circled area indicates the main command centre during the time of the digging of the trench in preparation for the battle against the Qureysh. I find it fascinating pondering on the relationship between this command area, the position of Banu Haraam and the cave. It truly is awe-inspiring to attempt to imagine the struggles our Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and his Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhu went through. They were so overcome with difficulties during this unique trench digging exercise; starving, under pressure, surrounded, exhausted, facing the unknown, concerned for their women and children gathered in refuge places back in Madinah. They could easily have resorted to falling into despair. But through the optimistic leadership of the Best of Creation, and the signs Allah Ta’ala kept giving them, all hardships were born with a winning attitude. SubhanAllah, may the Ummah relearn from these times. Ameen.
More details on Khandaq later in another post, Insha’Allah.
The following touching story is took place in the house of Jabir bin Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu, at the site of the present day Masjid Banu Haraam, and travel between this place and the main command area of the digging.
When the Trench was almost ready dug narrated Jabir bin Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu, I saw the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam in the state of severe hunger. So I returned to my wife and said, "Have you got anything to eat, for I have seen Allah’s Apostle in a state of severe hunger." She brought out for me, a bag containing one Sa’ of barley, and we had a domestic kid goat which I slaughtered then, and my wife ground the barley and she finished at the time I finished my job of slaughtering. Then I cut the meat into pieces and put it in an earthenware cooking pot, and returned to Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. My wife said, "Do not disgrace me in front of Allah’s Apostle and those who are with him." So I went to him and said to him secretly, "O Allah’s Apostle! I have slaughtered a kid goat of ours, and we have ground a Sa’ of barley which was with us. So please come, you and another person along with you." The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam raised his voice and said, "O people of Trench! Jabir has prepared a meal so let us go." Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said to me, "Don’t put down your earthenware meat pot from the fireplace or bake your dough till I come." So I returned to my house with Allah’s Apostle proceeding before the people. When I came to my wife, she said, "May Allah do so-and-so to you." I said, "I have told the Prophet of what you said." Then she brought the dough to the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, and he spat in it and invoked for Allah’s Blessings in it. Then he proceeded towards our earthenware meat-pot and spat in it and invoked for Allah’s Blessings in it. Then he said to my wife, "Call a lady-baker to bake along with you and keep on taking out scoops from your earthenware meat-pot, and do not put it down from its fireplace." They were one-thousand (some narrations say 1,500, and Almighty Allah Ta’ala knows best) who took their meals, and by Allah they all ate, and when they left the food and went away, our earthenware pot was still bubbling, full of meat as if it had not decreased, and our dough was still being baked as if nothing had been taken from it.
SubhanAllah, all these events happened in or around, or about the Companions of this most Mubarak tribe. The present day Masjid built on the site of the original place of Banu Haram is in the midst of a very poor suburb, hugging near to the side of Mount Sal’a. However I find visiting this area to be more than exhilarating. It is as though the essence of the deeds and actions of the Prophet and his noble Sahabah still fills the air and one is able to breathe in this blessedness by the Will of Allah Ta’ala.
I have also included on the image Thaniyyatul Wadaa (red) Masjid Sabaq (lime) and Saqeefa (pink) from yesterdays post, as well as the blue dot indicating the far north eastern corner of the courtyard of Haram, Insha’Allah to reiterate the relationships between the places we are discussing. May these squiggles and dots be clear, and the information of benefit, Insha’Allah.
All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.

Fatimah az-Zahra, the Queen of Jannah RadhiAllahu anha.

The intricately patterned metal doors, heavily secured with antique locks, guard the sacred chamber of the place where the house of Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha was; the most loved daughter of our Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, who is resting in his Abode of Peace a few meters to the left. This was the residence of Fatimah and her husband Ali and their five esteemed children, Hasan, Hussein, Mohsin (who died in childhood) Umme Kulthoom and Zainab RadhiAllahu anhum.
This small room was the earthly home of the Queen of Jannah! Her husband, Ali RadhiAllahu anhu being one of the ‘Asharah Mubasharah, the ten to have been given the glad tidings of their place in Jannah, with Hasan and Hussein being the Masters of the youth in Jannah! Such a humble dwelling exchanged for the most magnificent mansion in Paradise! The Prophet said, "On the Day of Judgment, a caller will call out, ‘lower your gaze until Fatimah has passed."
Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha will be the first woman to enter Jannah, where she will be surrounded by Al-Hur with downcast eyes due to the extreme reverence they have for her! Their exceptional beauty will wane in her presence, as their beauty is their natural disposition as gifted by Allah Ta’ala, whereas Fatimah RadhiAllahu earnt her status and radiance from the sacrifices and struggles she endured throughout her short life for the sake of Islam and her Akhirah. SubhanAllah.
When the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam traveled for five hundred thousand light-years on his journey to the Seven Heavens, and arrived at the fifth paradise which is called Jannat al Naim, the Garden of Beauty and Felicity, with doors of mixed gold and silver from heaven, he saw beautiful ladies whose radiant light among their servants made them appear like diamonds surrounded by pearls. His heart was moved towards them. He asked Jibreel, "Who are these ladies?" He answered, "This is Khadeeja, your first wife and the first Mu’minah, this is Maryam, the mother of Isa, and this is Asiyah, the wife of Firoun." (Some say Hawwa, the mother of all humanity, and Yukabid the mother of Musa are among these ladies, Allahu ‘Alum.) The most glowing lady looked like a sun among stars. Her light shone over the rest of the inhabitants of that Paradise. Jibreel said, "This is an angel representing your daughter Fatimah, 0 Prophet!"
Her mission to support the new Message bestowed on her father, our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam began when she was only five. She witnessed much of the torture and torment he was subjected to from such an innocent age. It was our Glorious Lady Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha who with passionate grief ran to the aid of our Noble Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and cleaned his body from the filth the Quraysh threw on him when he was in Sujud in the Ka’aba. From her chaste lips she stood cursing the Quraysh.
Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha seeing her father SallAllahu alaihi wasallam being shunned and abused so much at one time asked him to halt this mission of spreading and propagating Islam, but he replied to the effect that he would never desist from what Allah Ta’ala has commanded him to do and that these actions made him even more determined to spread the Truth throughout the world.
Life in Madinah was a series of different tests and trials.
Ali RadhiAllahu anhu wanted to propose to Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam for Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha, but he had nothing. When Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam heard of this he asked, "Where is your coat of mail I gave you on such and such a day?" (Some narrations say it was a shield) Ali RadhiAllahu anhu replied, "I have it." The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Give that to her." It is said that Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha married Ali RadhiAllahu anhu for an iron coat of mail! Other narrations offer slight variations saying that she also received an old Yemeni shawl and a worn out sheep skin, which they slept on during the night and would turn it over during the day using it to put the feed for the animals.
The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam instructed that fresh sand be spread on the floor of their original house, and he gave them gifts of a palm leave bed, a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre, a waterskin and a stone grinding mill. Slight variations have also been narrated. Their life was simple, both working tirelessly. The touching story of Tasbih Fatimah humbles us to accept all conditions Allah Ta’ala in His Wisdom presents to us.
The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam made the following beautiful Du’a for them.

The First, The Beginning, The Foremost, The Last, The End, The Ultimate, The Most Powerful, The Most Merciful for the Humble, The Most Merciful for the Merciful. O Allah, forgive my sins, be generous to my nature, make my earnings lawful. Satisfy me with Your sustenance. And do not let my heart turn to anything You have diverted away from me.
Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam also instructed Ali RadhiAllahu anhu to perform five acts every night before going to bed.
1. Give 4,000 dinaar, gold coins, as Sadaqah
2. Read the Qur’an Shareef once.
3. Pay the price of Jannah.
4. Reconcile two fighting persons.
5. Perform Hajj.
Ali RadhiAllahu anhu said: Ya Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, this is difficult for me. I will not be able to do that. Whereupon Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam replied:
- Recite Surah Fatiha 4 times and the reward for giving 4,000 dinaar will be recorded in your Book of Deeds.
- Recite Surah Ikhlas 3 times, and this will be equal to the reward of reciting one Qur’an Shareef.
- Recite Durood Shareef 3 times, and this will be the reward of paying the price of Jannah.
- Recite Astaghfirullah 10 times and you will receive the reward of reconciling two fighting persons.
- Recite the third Kalimah 4 times to receive the reward of performing one Hajj.
On hearing this Ali RadhiAllahu anhu said, Insha’Allah I will perform these acts every day before going to bed.
During the battle of Uhud, the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam sustained wounds to his face and head, and it was Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha who washed the blood while Ali RadhiAllahu anhu held the water. When she saw that bleeding was increasing continuously, she burnt a mat of date-palm leaves till it turned into ashes which she put over the wound and thus the bleeding ceased.
One day Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam went to Fatimah’s house but did not find ‘Ali there. So he asked, "Where is your cousin?" She replied, "There was something between us and he got angry with me and went out. He did not sleep for the mid-day nap in the house." Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam asked a person to look for him. That person came and said, "O Allah’s Apostle! Ali is sleeping in the mosque." Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam went there and found him lying with his upper body uncovered as the sheet had fallen down and he was covered with dust. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam started cleaning the dust from him saying: "Get up! O Aba Turab. Get up! O Aba Turab. There was no name dearer to Ali than his nickname Abu Turab, the father of dust. He used to feel happy whenever he was called by this name.
When Ali RadhiAllahu anhu had shown his dislike for what Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha had said to him she tried to win back his favour and circled around him seventy one times asking for his forgiveness. The next time she went around him he revealed a slight smile.
The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam requested Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha to visit a very pious lady, the wife of a woodcutter, who lived a little out of Madinah. Allahu ‘Alum, if this was in relationship to the incident when Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha upset Ali. So Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha set out to visit this lady whom her father recommended, walking in the hot sun over dusty tracks. She came upon the humble hut consisting of one room and knocked on the door, giving the greeting of Salam. A voice from inside asked who was there. Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha replied, "Fatimah, the daughter of Rasulullah." An answer from behind the door said that she did not have permission from her husband to allow any body to enter, that she would request permission, and Insha’Allah, she come back the next day. So Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha returned to her house with the intention of visiting the following day. She decided this time to take Hasan and Hussein RadhiAllahu anhuma with her. So she once again made the journey to the woodcutters wife. Once again knocked on the door and stated who she was and how he father had sent her. The woodcutter’s wife could hear the voices of the grandsons of Rasulullah and said through the closed door, but I only received permission for Lady Fatimah to visit. Insha’Allah I will ask my husband if I may invite young Hasan and Hussein in as well. Once again Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha walked the dusty track back to Madinah, with the intention of returning the next day, which she did and this time she entered the humble woodcutter’s home.
As they sat talking Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha saw that there was one small window high in the wall with a beam of sunlight streaming through. At the end of this beam were a few pieces of bread. As the light beam moved, so too did the woodcutter’s wife move the pieces of bread, so they remained in the sunlight. This fascinated Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha, who found herself asking why the woodcutter’s wife was doing such a thing. Whereupon she explained that her husband went out each day, all day long in the searing sun with a few pieces of bread in his pocket, with the bread becoming dry and hard in the hot sun, and that she did not feel comfortable eating soft bread if her husband could not! SubhanAllah!
Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha noticed three mats on the ground constituting the bed, and she knew that there was only the wood cutter and his wife, so she politely inquired about the third mat. The woodcutter’s wife explained, that if her husband happened to turn during his sleep she would not like that her back would be facing him, so she would get up and go to the other mat. Repeating this moving of position if he happened to turn. Such respect and obedience to her husband winning her the praise of Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam!
I have heard Ulema narrate that this woodcutters wife will be the one leading Lady Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha’s horse into Jannah, SubhanAllah, and that Almighty Allah knows best, and therefore enter before Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha. This has also been said of Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu. That he will be honoured by holding the rope of al-Buraq, the same miraculous steed Rasulullah rode to Paradise during the Night Visit, when Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam rides it into Jannah. Allahu ‘Alum.
The great love and affection the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam had for his daughter was seen in the manner in which whenever Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha would visit her father SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, it was he who would stand and kiss her forehead before offering her his seat! When he set out on any journey it was her that he visited last, and upon his return, after attending to prayers in the Masjid, Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha was the first to be visited.
Only six months passed after the death of her Beloved father SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, when she too was called back to Allah Ta’ala. Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam had told her that she would be the first person to meet him in the world beyond death. Her Janazah was the first to use the modest custom of making a cover for the deceased female. This was based on a previous conversation she had with Asmaa bint Anees RadhiAllahu anha when she said, "I do not like the dead bodies of women taken to the grave yard uncovered." Asmaa RadhiAllahu anha, who had been in Habshah, explained how they created a frame over the body of a woman. She demonstrated this to Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha with two long stems of the date palm forming an arch over the body, then draping a sheet over them to conceal the shape. Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha was thus carried to her grave in Jannatul Baqi upholding all the resplendent qualities befitting the name of Zahra.
Lady Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha, represents the embodiment of all that is divine in womanhood, the noblest ideal of feminine virtues, who was proclaimed by her devoted father SallAllahu alaihi wasallam to be the Queen of Jannah. May Allah Ta’ala shower her and all her noble lineage with the most brilliant of lights and the most fragrant of perfumes. Ameen. And may He, place in our hearts a desire and tenderness to follow her endearing examples. Ameen.

The Arabic Hadith relating to when Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam called Ali RadhiAllahu anhu "Aba Turab":

Hope.
And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way. (2:186)
And they hope for His mercy and fear His chastisement. (17:57)
Their sides draw away from (their) beds, they call upon their Lord in fear and in hope, and they spend (benevolently) out of what We have given them. (32:16)
That no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another. And that man shall have nothing but what he strives for. And that his striving shall soon be seen. Then shall he be rewarded for it with the fullest reward. And that to your Lord is the goal. And that He it is Who makes people laugh and weep. (53:38-43)
Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu heard Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam saying: “Verily Allah created Mercy. The day He created it, He made it into one hundred parts. He withheld with Him ninety-nine parts, and sent its one part to all His creatures. Had the non-believer known of all the Mercy which is in the Hands of Allah, he would not lose hope of entering Paradise, and had the believer known of all the punishment which is present with Allah, he would not consider himself safe from the Hell-Fire."

Hope.

Stellar Sahabah Al Anbar.
The patient ones will indeed be paid their wages without account. (39:10)
The Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam prepared an expedition of three hundred men, under the command of Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah RadhiAllahu anhu in 8 A.H. Their mission was to watch the caravan of the Quraysh pagans near the Red Sea. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam gave them a bag full of dates for their provisions, which they carried on the shoulders. They had been hardly out for fifteen days when they ran short of rations.
In order to provide the contingent with food, Qais RadhiAllahu anhu began buying three camels daily from his own men, to feed the Mujahideen, with a promise to pay for them on their return to Madinah. He slaughtered three camels each day a few times, but Abu Ubaidah RadhiAllahu anhu seeing that the slaughter of camels would deprive the party of their only means of transport prohibited him from slaughtering any more. The Amir then collected the dates that had been left with each person and stored them in a bag. He would issue one date to each man as his daily ration.
Jabir bin ‘Abdullah RadhiAllahu anhu was asked, "How could one date benefit you?" He replied, "We came to know its value when even that too finished. We longed even for that one date when the whole stock was exhausted. We were on the verge of starvation.
We stayed at the seashore for half a month and were struck with such severe hunger that we even ate the Khabt, the leaves of the Salam, a thorny desert tree. The army came to be known as Jaish-ul-Khabt.
When they reached this stage, Allah Ta’ala had mercy on them for He always brings ease after every hardship, provided it is endured patiently. A big fish known as Al-’Anbar was thrown out of the sea for them. The Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum reported that it was like a small mountain. The fish was so big that they all lived on it for eighteen days and rubbed its fat on their bodies till they returned to their original state of being strong and healthy.
Abu Ubaida RadhiAllah anhu ordered two of its ribs to be fixed on the ground; then he went to the tallest man of his companions, and got him to ride on his she-camel under this arch formed by the two ribs. Another narration said that eighteen Sahabah could stand in the eye socket alone!
They also filled their satchels with the remaining portion, which lasted them right up to Madinah. When the episode was narrated to the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam he said: "The fish was a provision arranged for you by Allah Ta’ala, feed us if you have some of it." He was given some of the fish and he ate it.

The road from Madinah to the Red Sea winds past extremely rugged terrain. Huge imposing mountains of rock and massive expanses of formidable desert sands. The satellite image gives a scant idea of how the geography is. The following two photos show the remains of Ottoman structures, rock buildings growing out from the mountains of rock. This old settlement was about half way between Madinah and Badr, which is then about half way to the Red Sea.

A contemporary whale story. A group of Saudi brothers were sitting with a visiting Sheikh, when the conversation turned to one of them relating a fishing trip he had recently been on with a group of friends. While they were out in the Red Sea they saw two huge whales, they were so big that that could have swallowed the whole boat and all that was in it in one gulp. This incident made them reflect on the story of Yunus Alaihis Salam, and the above account, saying to the Sheikh, how now they could comprehend the Qudrat of Allah Ta’ala. Whereupon the Sheikh asked them if they needed tangible proof for all that Allah Ta’ala has created?

The Red Sea, but no sign of any whales!
Insha’Allah we remember these events as a source of comfort whenever we too are faced with difficulties regarding practicing Islam. Insha’Allah we deeply ponder the numerous lessons Allah Ta’ala is offering us with the amazing examples the Stellar Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum were put to test with. May Allah Ta’ala enlighten their graves and raise them to be with their Beloved Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.
And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops, and give glad tidings to the steadfast, who say when misfortune falls on them: We belong to Allah and we shall indeed return to Him. Such are they on whom are blessings from Allah and they are the rightly guided ones. (2:155-157)
All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.

From the date palm come clusters of low hanging dates. (6:99)
It is we who, like a tulip in the desert of Medina,
Bear in our heart the scar of longing for Medina.
Passionate longing for Paradise may disappear
from the wise man’s head, but
It is not possible that the passionate longing for Medina
should leave him…
The Tuba tree that has lifted its head
on the apex of the Throne
Is only a branch from the garden-adorning palm tree of Medina.
When you eat dates, kiss their kernels, for
The kernels of the dates of Medina are the beads of the angels’ tasbih!
(Jami)

Crisp, crunchy, succulent, juicy, delicious are ruby red and golden yellow dates. While the soft melting flesh of the ripening process tantalize the taste buds in a totally different manner. Date season is now at its peak of perfection in the cool palm glades of Madinah. During the past month workers have been laboriously covering the bountiful bunches with a mesh cloth, stitching it in place to prevent the birds from feasting on the crop. The plump ripe bunches having been kissed by the sun are harvested by workers precariously dangling from the tall palms.

Farmers with their loaded pick up trucks line the road sides creating make shift markets. The summer sunlight glistens on the multitude of boxes and containers proudly displaying Allah Ta’ala’s ancient fruit. So esteemed is the date palm and its fruit that Allah Ta’ala refers to it numerous times in His Qur’an Majeed and informs us that it is one of the trees in Jannah. SubhanAllah. From the beginning of recorded history, the date palms were known in all the lands between the Nile and the Euphrates.

The following events from the time of our Beloved Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam reveal how prominent dates and many related topics were pivotal in their lives, and explain why we feel so attached to the date palms and their various stages of growth as we see them in Madinah. AsShukriLlah for these delicious bounties. May we too be the recipients of all the other qualities we learn from these inspiring accounts. Insha’Allah. Ameen.
The early days of establishing Islam in Madinah were beset with great hardship. Umar RadhiAllahu anhu said that the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and the Companions RadhiAllahu anhum were often hungry and that there were not even enough rejected dates for him to satisfy his, or his family’s hunger. In later years some one asked Aishah RadhiAllahu anha if they had a lantern. "If we had had oil to burn a lantern we would have drunk it." The Muslims used to go out on expeditions with hardly any provisions. Abu Musa RadhiAllahu anhu tells of one time when there was only one camel between six. They used to take turns on riding it. The skin began to peel off their feet from the incessant walking, and they used to bind them with rags. This expedition became known as Dhat al-Riqa’, Battle of the Rags.
Food rations used to run so low that people would suck dates rather than eat them. Leaves and locusts would make up the rest of their diet. The Muhajiroun had to contend with a drastic change in diet. Previously they had been used to meat and milk, but in Madinah dates constituted the major portion of their diet. Tabarani has related once incident where one of the Makkan Muslims said to Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, "O Prophet of Allah, these dates have burnt our intestines."
Once Aishah RadhiAllahu anha said to Urwa RadhiAllahu anhu, "O my nephew! We used to see the crescent, and then the crescent and then the crescent in this way we saw three crescents in two months and no fire for cooking used to be made in the houses of Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. I said, "O my aunt! Then what use to sustain you?" ‘Aishah RadhiAllahu anha said, "The two black things: dates and water."
The call for Jihad against the Byzantines to the north at Tabuk was announced at the height of the date harvest in the year AD 630. It was an exceptionally hot summer with an unusual plenteous amount of fruit on the trees, requiring a huge workforce to tend to the harvest. However such was the spirit for joining Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, and their love of Allah Ta’ala in these expeditions that the Sahabah’s strength in leaving the Dunya was shown in stories of how they rode on horseback through the laden trees, the bunches touching their shoulders, without concerning themselves with what normally would be their livelihood. The army prepared for this expedition was 30,000 with 10,000 horses!
Once Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu was offered work to help the owner of a date plantation to harvest his fruit. At the end of the day he was given many dates as payment for his work. He ate some at the time to satisfy his hunger, wrapping the remainder in a cloth intending to eat them later. On returning from this place he met the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, who enquired what it was he was carrying. After explaining that he was saving these dates for later, Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam asked him what guarantee did he have that Allah Ta’ala would give him life till then. Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu, gave the dates to the next person he met!

Jabir bin ‘Abdullah Al-Ansari RadhiAllahu anhu on the day of the battle of Uhud, saw a Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhu eating some dates asking the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, "Can you tell me where I will be if I should get martyred?" The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam replied, "In Paradise." The Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhu threw the dates away and fought till he was martyred. He brought his Jannah for a handful of dates!
Jabir bin ‘Abdullah Al-Ansari RadhiAllahu anhu’s father was martyred on the day of Uhud and left six daughters and some debts to be paid. When the time of harvesting the dates came, he went to Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and said, "O Allah’s Apostle! You know that my father was martyred on Uhud’s day and owed much debt, and I wish that the creditors would see you." The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Go and collect the various kinds of dates and place them separately in heaps"’ He did accordingly and then called the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. On seeing him, the creditors started claiming their rights pressingly at that time. When the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam saw how they behaved, he circled the biggest heap three times and sat over it and said, "Call your companions, the creditors." The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam kept on measuring and giving them, till Allah cleared all my father’s debts. By Allah, it would have pleased me that Allah would clear the debts of my father even though I had not taken a single date to my sisters. But by Allah, all the heaps remained as they were. I looked at the heap where Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam was sitting and noticed that it appeared as if not a single date had been taken from it.
When Abu Usaid As-Sa’idi RadhiAllahu anhu got married, he invited the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and his Companions. His wife prepared the food for them and brought it to them. She soaked some dates in water in a stone pot overnight, and when the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam had finished his food, she provided him with that drink of soaked dates.
Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu narrated that dates used to be brought to Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam immediately after being plucked. Different persons would bring their dates till a big heap collected in front of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Once Al-Hasan and Al-Husain RadhiAllahu anhuma were playing with these dates. One of them took a date and put it in his mouth. Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam looked at him and took it out from his mouth and said, "Don’t you know that Muhammad’s offspring do not eat what is given in charity?"
Anas bin Malik said that the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam forbade the sale of fruits till their benefit is evident; and the sale of date palms till the dates are almost ripe. He was asked what ‘are almost ripe’ meant. He replied, "Got red and yellow. Till there is no danger of blight." Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam further said, "If Allah spoiled the fruits, what right would one have to take the money of one’s brother?" Narrated Ibn Shihab, If somebody bought fruits before their benefit is evident and then the fruits were spoiled with blights, the loss should be suffered by the owner not the buyer. Narrated Salim bin ‘Abdullah from Ibn Umar, Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Do not sell or buy fruits before their benefit was evident and do not sell fresh dates for dried dates."
Narrated Anas bin Malik, Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam never proceeded for the prayer on the Day of ‘Id-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas said that the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam used to eat an odd number of dates.
Jabala narrated "We were in Madinah with some of the Iraqi people, and we were struck with famine and Ibn Az-Zubair used to give us dates. Ibn ‘Umar used to pass by and say, "The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam forbade us to eat two dates at a time, unless one takes the permission of one’s companions."
Many narrations tell how the date stones would be saved and washed and dried by the Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum for keeping count of their Dhikr. They are like polished beads after excessive handling, "beads of the Angels tasbih."
Once the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam distributed dates among his Companions and gave each one seven dates. He gave Abu Hurairah seven dates too, one of which was a Hashafa a type which dries on the tree before fully ripe, making it very dry and hard. Said Abu Hurairah that none of the other dates was more liked by me than that one, for it prolonged my chewing it.
Anas RadhiAllahu anhu narrated that the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam stayed three days at a place between Khaibar and Madinah, where he freed Safiyya bint Huyay and then married her, her Mahr was her freedom and a wedding banquet which included neither meat nor bread. The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam ordered for the leather dining sufra to be spread, and Haisa* was placed on them. That was the Walima of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. The Muslims asked whether Safiyya would be considered as his wife or as a slave girl of what his right hands possessed. Then they said, "If the Prophet screens her from the people, then she is the Prophet’s wife but if he does not screen her, then she is a slave girl." So when the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam proceeded, he made a place for her on the camel behind him and screened her from people.

Narrated Anas bin Malik, "Whenever the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam passed by my mother Um-Sulaim he used to visit her and greet her. Anas further said: When the Prophet was a bridegroom during his marriage with Zainab, Um Sulaim said to me, "Let us give a gift to Allah’s Apostle." I said to her, "Do it." So she prepared Haisa, a sweet dish made from dates, butter and dried yoghurt and she sent it with me to him. I took it to him and he said, "Put it down," and ordered me to call some men whom he named, and to invite whomever I would meet. I did what he ordered me to do, and when I returned, I found the house crowded with people and saw the Prophet keeping his hand over the Haisa and saying over it whatever Allah wished him to say. Then he called the men in batches of ten to eat of it, and he said to them, "Mention the Name of Allah, and each man should eat of the dish the nearest to him." When all of them had finished their meals, some of them left and a few remained there talking, over which I felt unhappy. Then the Prophet went out towards the dwelling places of his wives and I too, went out after him and told him that those people had left. Then he returned and entered his dwelling place and let the curtains fall while I was in his dwelling place, and he was reciting the Verses,
Believers, do not enter the Prophet’s apartments for a meal unless you are given permission to do so; do not linger until (a meal) is ready. When you are invited, enter; then when you have taken your meal, depart. Do not stay on and talk for that would offend the Prophet, though he would shrink from asking you to leave. Allah does not shrink from the truth. When you ask his wives for something, do so from behind a screen; this is purer for your hearts and theirs. It is not right for you to offend Allah’s Messenger. (33-53) Abu Uthman said Anas served the Prophet for ten years.
*Haisa is regularly offered to guests by the Madanians. The following is how one family make it here. They love to tell that this is what the Ummul-Mu’mineen RadhiAllahu anhunna would make for Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.
Melt 100grams of butter in a saucepan, add half a cup of plain flour and stir gently until the mixture becomes reddish. Meanwhile, remove the date stones from approximately a kilo of dates. The mushy ones you can now buy in the vacuum packs. This is a sticky job! Add this date "puree" to the butter and flour mixture and mix thoroughly. Remove from heat and when cooled knead until it is a smooth consistency. Press onto a tray and if liked you can add chopped nuts. Some roll it into small balls. Alhumdulillah, very sweet and delicious!
All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ameen.

Juma’ah Mubarak Two.
Du’a
Our Du’a is our link to Almighty Allah Ta’ala. His Messenger, our Beloved and Most Esteemed Prophet, SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, has left us the greatest spiritual gift with his Du’a. May we devote more time calling on the Only Ones Who truly hear our supplications.
And your Lord says: Call upon Me, I will answer you. (40:60)
And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way. (2:186)
The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said that Du’a is the essence of worship, and that there is nothing that is more honourable, or dearer to Allah Ta’ala than Du’a.
O Allah, to You I complain of my weakness, of my helplessness, and my lowliness before men. O Most Merciful of the merciful, You are the Lord of the weak, and You are my Lord. Into whose hands will You entrust me? Unto some stranger who will mistreat me? Or to an enemy who dominates me? If You are not angry with me I care not, but Your favouring help will be easier for me. I take refuge in the light of Your Countenance by which the darkness is illuminated, and the things of this world and the next are rightly ordered, lest I become the object of Your wrath and anger. To You alone belongs the right to blame and to chastise until Your pleasure is met. There is no power and no might except through You.
O Allah, you hear me and se me and know everything that I reveal or conceal. None of my affairs are hidden from You. I am person in distress, a needy person, a beggar, a fearful person. I confess my shortcomings. I entreat You like a humble needy person. I beseech You like a sinful lowly person. I ask You like a person in tribulation whose neck bows before You; who cries in front of You; whose whole body trembles before You. O Allah! Do not leave me frustrated in my prayer, and be the Most Merciful and the Most Gracious to me. O the best of those who are beseeched! O the best of those who give!
O Allah, I ask You to make me a lover of You, a lover of everyone who loves You, and a lover of any action that may bring me closer to loving You.
O Allah, I ask You to make me loved by You, Your Angels, prophets, and all Your creatures.
O Allah, make my love for You dearer to me than my own self and my own kin, and dearer to me than my own wealth and my own children, and dearer to em than cool water given to a parched mouth.
O Allah, bless me with the joy of good hearing and good sight. And I ask You to support me with victory over those who do me injustice and to avenge me from them.
O Allah, I ask You to make the last part of my life that best of it, and to make the best of my deeds the final ones, and to make the best of my days the day on which I meet You.
O Allah, make me patient and thankful; and make me small in my own eyes, but big in the eyes of people. O Lord, forgive me, grant me Your Mercy, and guide me to the way which is most upright.
O Allah, shower Your grace upon Muhammad, his kin, companions, wives and posterity.
O Allah, I ask You to give me the most bounteous share of my sustenance when I grow old and my life comes closer to the end.
O Allah, I ask You to guide me to extend to You the best of entreating and the best of supplications; and to guide me to achieve the best of success and get the best of reward. Support me with resolve, enhance the record of my good deeds, verify my faith, elevate my grade, accept my prayers, and forgive my sins. And I ask You to place me in Jannatul Firdous. Ameen.
O Allah, favour me with a large share of whatever good descends from You, whatever grace that is granted by You, whatever righteousness is bestowed by You, whatever bounties are spread by You, whatever sins are forgiven by You, and whatever shortcomings are covered by You. O Allah, in Whose Hand is my forelock, the One Who knows my afflictions and my needs, the One Who sees my poverty and my deprivation, O Lord, I ask You, by the Rights and Sacredness that belongs to You, and by the Greatest of Your Attributes and Names, to make my nights and days filled with remembering and serving You, and to guide me to actions which would be acceptable to You.
O Allah, because of my hope in You forgiving my sins and overlooking my wrong doings, I am tempted to ask from You what I do not deserve. So here I am submitting my prayers and supplications to You with a feeling of safety and closeness, knowing that You have been Benevolent to me, while I have been transgressing against myself in matters pertaining to my relationship with You. You have been befriending me with Your blessings and bounties while I have been antagonizing You with my disobedience. But my trust in You has encouraged me to resort to You and ask You to bestow Your grace and benevolence upon me. Verily, You are the Best to accept repentance and You are the Most Merciful. There is no god but You. You are the Initiator. Before You there was none. And You are the Eternal Who is never unmindful. You are the Ever-Living Who dies not. You are the Creator of whatever may be seen or unseen. Every day in Divine Splendour You are. O Allah, Your Reach is above all things in mercy and knowledge. O Most Benevolent, Most Merciful, O Most Clement, Most Generous. O Allah, You are the One and Only, the Eternal. The Absolute. You are the Living and the Giver of Life. You are the Living and Ultimate Controller and Sustainer of all things. There is no god but You, O our Lord. We are Your bondsmen and we are serving in Your Way. So make it easy for us to follow the way that leads to every good.
O Allah, deny me not the good of whatever You have because of my own evils. O Allah I ask You to grant me a secure living together with a bountiful sustenance, and to guide me to righteous actions.
O Allah, I ask You to raise me high in esteem, remove my burdens, purify my heart, guard my chastity, and forgive my sins. And I ask You to place me in the topmost stations of Paradise.
Exalted is He; for Whom Dignity is a cloak and Whose words are Dignified.
Exalted is He; for Whom Glory is a garment and Whose Bounties are Glorified.
Exalted is He; the One and Only to Whom all Exaltation is due.
Exalted is He; Granter of bounties and blessings.
Exalted is He; Possessor of all Glory and all Generosity.
Exalted is He; Whose Knowledge encompasses everything.
O Allah, You are Verily the Most Worthy of remembrance, the Most Deserving of worship, and the Best Source of needed support. You are the Kindest Sovereign, the Most Gracious one in giving. You are the Sovereign, with no partner to You. You are the One, with no equal. Everything will perish except Your own Face. Only with Your leave shall You be obeyed; and no act of disobedience to You shall ever escape Your knowledge. When You are obeyed You respond with thankfulness; and when You are disobeyed You respond with forgiveness.
"Exalted be Allah. All praise is due to Allah. Allah is the Most Great. There is no strength or might other than what is given by Allah": May this declaration match the number of what Allah has created and the number of what Allah creates; the weight of what Allah has created and the weight of what Allah creates; the fullness of what Allah created and the fullness of what Allah creates; the fullness of His heavens and the fullness of His earth; the totality of all the afore-said and the multiples thereof; the number of His creatures, the weight if His Throne, the infinite limits of His Mercy and the ink of His words. May this declaration be such as to befit the extent of Allah’s pleasure, and may it continue to be echoed until Allah is pleased; and may it be such as to befit the continuity of Allah’s pleasure and match the number of instances in which Allah’s creatures have remembered Him throughout the entire times past ,and the number of instances in which His creatures shall remember Him throughout the entire times coming; year after year, month after month, week after week, day after day, hour after hour, breath after breath; from time immemorial to the infinite end of time; from the beginning of the world to the unending limits of the Hereafter; from the Beginning that has no beginning to the End that has no end.
O Allah, to You I complain of a soul commanding to evil, rushing to offenses, eager to disobey You, and exposing itself to Your anger. It takes me on the roads of disasters, it makes me the easiest of perishers before You; many its pretexts, drawn out its expectations; when evil touches it, it is anxious, when good touches it, grudging; inclining to sport and diversion, full of heedlessness and inattention, it hurries me to misdeeds and makes me delay repentance.
O Allah, I complain to You of an enemy who misguides me and a Shaytan who leads me astray. He has filled my breast with tempting thoughts, and his suggestions have encompassed my heart. He supports caprice against me, embellishes for me the love of this world, and separates me from obedience and proximity!
O Allah, to You I complain of a heart that is hard, turned this way and that by tempting thoughts, clothed in rust and the seal, and of an eye too indifferent to weep in fear of You and eagerly seeking that which gladdens it!
O Allah, there is no force and no strength except in Thy power, and no deliverance for me from the detested things of this world save through Thy preservation. So I ask You by Thy far-reaching wisdom and Thy penetrating will not to let me expose myself to other than Thy munificence and not to turn me into a target for trials! Be for me a helper against enemies, a coverer of shameful things and faults, a protector against afflictions, a preserver against acts of disobedience! By Thy clemency and mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful!
O Allah! Inspire me with good conduct and save me from the evil of my selfishness.
O Allah! I ask You to guide me to the doing of good deeds and abstaining from bad deeds and love those who are humble, and to forgive me and show mercy to me. And if You wish a trial for Your servants, take me to You before falling into it.
O Allah, cause Your love to exceed all loves in me, and cause Your fear to be the greatest of all fears in me.
The life of this world is but play and amusement: and if ye believe and guard against Evil, He will grant you your recompense, and will not ask you of your possessions.(47:36)
O Allah! O Controller of the Hearts! Keep my heart firm in Your religion; keep it contented with Your worship.
O Allah! You are my Lord. There is no deity except You. You are my Creator and I am your creature. I try to keep my covenant with You and to live in the hope of Your promise as well as I can. I seek refuge in You from my one evil deeds. I acknowledge Your favours to me; and I acknowledge my sins. Forgive me my sins, for there is no one who can forgive sins except You.
O Allah! I seek refuge in You from a decline in Your favour, from a change in Your protection, from Your sudden punishment and all Your displeasure.
O Allah! I ask You for health, for integrity, for good character, and that I may be pleased with my portion.
O Allah! Grant me soundness of belief, goodness of character, forgiveness of my sins, and Your eternal pleasure in the Hereafter.
O Allah, I beg of You all good things whose treasures are in Your Hands and I seek Your protection from all evil things whose stores are in Your Hands and from the mischief of things whose strings You hold in Your Hands.
O Allah, You are disposed to forgive sins and love the habit of forgiving faults so pardon us all.
O Allah, Your mercy and knowledge comprehend everything, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your path and save them from the punishment of Hell.
O Allah, help me in remembering You and being grateful to You and worshipping You well.
O Allah! You are my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but you. You created me and I am your slave, and I am faithful to my covenant and my promise as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You all the blessings You have bestowed upon me, and I confess to You all my sins. So I entreat You to forgive my sins, for nobody can forgive sins except You. I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Mighty, Whom there is none worthy except Him, the Living, The Eternal, and I repent unto Him.
O Allah bless our master Muhammad in quantity great as Your forbearance, bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as Your knowledge, bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as Your words, bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as Your blessing, bless our master Muhammad with the capacity of Your heavens and bless Sayyidina Muhammad with the capacity of Your earth, bless our master Muhammad with the capacity of Your Throne, bless our master Muhammad with the weight of Your Throne, bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as what Your pen writes in the Mother of the Book, bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as what You created in the seven heavens, and bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as what You will create in them until the Day of Resurrection every day a thousand times.
O Allah, bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as every drop which falls from Your heavens to Your earth from the day You created the world to the Day of Resurrection on every day a thousand times.
O Allah, bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as whoever says ‘Subhanallah’, ‘la ilaha illa’llah’, ‘Allahu akbar’, and exalts You from the day You created the world to the Day of Resurrection a thousand times in every day.
O Allah, bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as their breaths and words and bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as every breath You created in them from the day You created the world until the Day of Resurrection a thousand times every day.
O Allah, bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as the running clouds and bless our master Muhammad in quantity as great as the scattering winds from the Day You created the world until the Day of Resurrection a thousand times in every day.

O Majestic Moon.
O Majestic Moon, bursting with a glowing fullness, serenely sailing effortlessly above this City of Light.
Exalted is He who put constellations in the Heavens, a radiant light, and an illuminating moon. (25:61)
For how many eons have you glided over this sacred place. Knowing from the beginning of your creation, as written on the ‘Arshi Llahi, that Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam was destined to bless this landscape. How more luminous you must have become upon his arrival, submitting to the Will of your Creator to be split in two for the Best of Creation SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.
The hour drew nigh and the moon did rend asunder. (55:1)
O Obedient Moon, you heard Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam say, "Witness this miracle." And how his uncle Abu Talib tried to dissuade the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam so as to keep the peace between him and the idolaters. In words soft and gentle he begged the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam to abandon his affair. Dear Moon, you heard the reply "O my uncle, if they placed the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand to cause me to renounce my task, verily I would not desist there from until Allah made manifest His cause or I perished in the attempt." The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, overcome by the thought that his uncle and protector was willing to desert him, turned to depart. But Abu Talib called him loudly to come back, and he came. "Say whatever you please; for by the Lord I shall not desert you ever." All the while you patiently followed your course with the sun, as Commanded.
O Patient Moon, did you tremble when Ibrahim Alahis Salam thought you were his Rabb?
Euphoria fills the heart as you fill the Madinah sky with your beauty. How many cycles of your sublime waxing and waning witnessed our Beloved SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and his respected Companions RadhiAllahu anhum? Dedicating their lives for the propagation of this glorious Deen. And centuries later your enviable path takes you above his resting place. How you must swoon in ecstasy on gaining such proximity. What restraint you must succumb to maintaining your decreed journey and not following your passions by falling into the lap of the most Beloved of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. SubhanAllah. What words of delight must be exchanged as you float by, so close, so often and for so long.
Am I truly looking at the same moon who brought joy and elation to our Noble Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and his Noble Companions RadhiAllahu anhum signaling the times for each new month to be born, heralding Ramadhan, Hajj and the two Eids.

O Shy Moon, how you must love people searching for you in the vast sky at each new birth. And what happiness you must feel peering through the open domes of Masjid Nabawi seeing the sufra spread surrounded by hundreds of worshippers eager for Allah Ta’ala’s favours as they break their fast for your three white days. You must be rapturous in seeing the Sunnah being upheld.
O Forever Wandering Moon, swelling and diminishing, my tears drop on the Mubarak dust of Madinah. Are they dropping on the same place you would have seen Sayyidatuna Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha with her blessed sons, Hasan and Hussain RadhiAllahu anhuma. Maybe they were playing, maybe Sayyidatuna Fatimah RadhiAllahu anha was carrying water or grinding flour. Or were you hiding your pleasure when Umar RadhiAllahu took advantage of your dark side, secretly roaming the streets of Madinah distributing Sadaqah to the poor. Perhaps you were present when Ali RadhiAllahu anhu spared the life of his enemy due his own anger rather than killing him with the sincerity of intention that it was for Allah Ta’ala. O Benevolent Moon, maybe you witnessed the army of Angels fighting with the Muslims in the town bearing one of your names, Badr.
O Spectacular Moon, how mesmerized I become thinking that you are 400,000 kilometers away, but so powerful that you play tug with the oceans twice a day. SubhanAllah. Allahu Akbar. Glorified be Your Name, Lord of the Worlds! Glory be to Him Who chose for everything its proper place and the right measure, according to calculation unknown but to Him.
He makes the dawn break; He makes the night for rest; and He made the sun and the moon to a precise measure. That is the design of the Almighty, the All Knowing. (6:96)
O Elegant Moon, so blessed to have heard words falling from the laudable lips of our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam every month as you renewed your appearance to him: "A new moon of good and right guidance; a new moon of good and right guidance; a new moon of good and right guidance. I believe in Him Who created you" three times. He would then say: "Praise be to Allah Who has made such and such a month to pass and has brought such and such a month."
O Cheerful Moon, how often your charm has been used for the best of descriptions in countless traditions and poetry extolling the virtues of our Majestic Messenger SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. "His face was glittering with happiness, for when ever Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam was happy, his face used to glitter, as if it was a piece of the full moon." "He is like a blooming flower in its freshness and the full moon in its spendour." "Mohammed is the exemplar to both worlds, the guide of the descendants of Adam. He is the sun of creation, the moon of the celestial spheres, the all-seeing eye." "You are like the full moon, nay you are brighter Your face is like fine water that drips, O Ornament of the World, O Aim of Hopes Who has ever perceived a face such as yours?" "He saw the Prophet, lovely as the moon, Whose face, Truth’s shadow, was the sun at noon, Whose hair in two black heavy braids was curled –Each hair, a hundred times, out priced the world."
O Enthralling Moon what delight it must have been to hear the welcoming singing of the people as Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam first entered Madinah. "Oh the white moon rose over us. From the valley of Wada. And we owe it to show gratefulness. Where the call is to Allah. Oh you who were raised among us. Coming with a word to be obeyed. You have brought to this city nobleness. Welcome best caller to God’s way. Welcome best caller to God’s way."
With such hope, O Endearing Moon, your image inspires us, the Ummah of Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, to redeem ourselves, to repent, to obey, so that we may be among the elite in the Eyes of Allah Ta’ala, and be recognized for intercession by Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. The superiority of the learned man over the devout is like that of the full moon, over the rest of the stars. The first group of people who will enter Paradise will be shining like the full moon. And those unfortunate ones who need to spend time in Jahannam will by Divine decree, be rescued and liberated from the Fire by the venerable Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Washed by the Water of Life at the Gate of Paradise and made perfectly clean again, they will have their youth restored. Their faces will be like the full moon. Only these words will be written on their foreheads: “These were the People of the Fire. Allah, the All-Merciful freed them from that fire.” With this writing on their foreheads they will enter Paradise. After a while they will plead with the Lord to have that writing removed from their brows, explaining that it leaves them in shame, in sorrow and in remorse. The All-Glorious One will accept their prayer, and will erase that writing from their brows. Having been rescued from torment because of their faith, and through the intercession of Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, the disobedient members of his Ummah rejoice in divine favor. Allah, save us from the Fire, and admit us to Paradise with the righteous.
O Amiable Moon, how you must smile at the story of Nasreddin Hoja! As he was returning home late and tired one night, he stopped at the village well to draw a drink for himself. He was horrified to see the full moon reflected in the dark water at the bottom of the well. "Good Lord, the moon’s fallen down the well!" he muttered to himself. "I’ve got to rescue it! What would we do without the beautiful moon?" He grabbed the bucket and rope that lay beside the well and tossed the bucket in. Then he maneuvered it with the rope until he saw the moon reflecting safely from the water in the bucket. Bending over the well, he tried to raise the bucket. But its lip was stuck on a stone, and the more Nasreddin Hoja pulled, the less successful he was at raising the bucket and rescuing the moon. Finally he braced his foot on the edge of the well and heaved. Suddenly the bucket broke loose and the Hoja tumbled onto his back beside the well. Above him, he saw the lovely full moon floating serenely in the sky. "Well, that’s a good job done," he said to himself as he got to his feet. "Praise God, the moon is back where it belongs!" And he went home to bed.
O Mellow Moon, may I learn obedience from you, how to stay on course, may a fraction of your secrets of Glorifying our Lord be revealed to me.
O Humble Moon, may I learn from your humility. If for one split second you wavered from the Laws of Allah Ta’ala the tide would be so strong that it could fragment mountains and dislodge continents from their place.
O Dulcet Moon, convey my salam on our Prince of Peace SallAllahu alaihi wasallam each and every time you glide over his green Abode of Peace.
