taraweeh at khandaq [Ramadhan 1429] — almiskeenah @ 11:37 pm

One of the two minarets of Masjid Jamia Al-Khandaq, where we offered Taraweeh last night, in what seemed like the glow of the sacrifices and  victory of this historic setting.

The moon travels its Ramadhan course above the humble Masjid that marks the place where ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab RadhiAllahu anhu had his command tent during the Battle of the Trench. So far this drab old building has defied demolition orders, but for how long only Allah Ta’ala knows, as it is right in the middle of the car park. Alhumdulillah the ATM machine that stood to the right of this Masjid, marking where Abu Bakr As-Saddiq RadhiAllahu anhu’s tent was has been removed, making way for the extended parking area. Insha’Allah Masjid Fath, being perched high on a rock, and Masjid Salman Farsi nearby seem as though they will survive destruction as they are not as close to the new Masjid, or the area needed for car parking.

During the battle of al-Khandaq, Jabir RadhiAllahu anhu narrated that ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab RadhiAllahu anhu came one day during the encounter after the sun had set, when he started to curse the kuffar of Quraish and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I could hardly pray until the sun had almost set.” The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: “I too have not prayed, by Allah.” So we went down into the valley of Buthan. He did wudhu for prayer, and we did likewise. Then he prayed Asr after the sun had set, and after that he prayed Maghrib.”

Finally after more than two years looking like it was finished, the Masjid was officially opened last week. The prayer area for sisters is on the fisrt floor. It is quite spacious with wooden partitions separating it from the main prayer hall below. However there were three small ‘peek holes’ enabling sisters to look into the men’s section, which I thought was innovative for here! I speedily took this photo, trying not to be seen. Insha’Allah I will arrange for some more detail photos later, as some of the features are pleasing in their simplicity. I was amazed that brothers exited after Witr in a flash, while sisters were congested around the small exit area for a long time. This seems to be how it is in all the Masaajid. May we our rewards for Sabr be forever on the increase.

The back of Masjid Umar contrasted with the new Masjid.

Apologies for scant effort with posts, other pursuits beckon, Alhumdulillah, during this most blessed time.

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.  May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

  6. Wa ‘alaikumus Salam,
Do not feel selfish Dear Zed, Alhumdulillah we have been given Du’a as the core of our Deen, as well as fulfilling the requests of our brothers and sisters, so you are doing me a favour! Alhumdulillah that Allah Ta’ala answers all our Adiyah in the best ways He knows for us.
The section at the feet of our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam is not open to sisters during these crowded times, and Ziyarah for sisters is after Taraweeh until 1am, which is quite chaotic, so I tend to offer Salam and Adiyah from the courtyard in front of the Blessed Abode.
Hippity hop Ya funny miss!!! Masha’Allah indeed that you have been blessed with the ground witnessing your Salat at these places! May you be brought again and again, Ameen.
JazakiLlahu khairan for sharing this: “..so everyone be truthful in following Mustafa,
and know that he is the gift and favour for those who received Allah’s care.” Such a gift and favour, and only for the Ummah of al-Mustafa SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.
I would like to be sharing much more, but have chosen not to do much in front of this screen for the moment. Also, I do get somewhat jaded with the limited opportunities for taking photos…out of the question where sisters are and still there is the underlying mentality here that it is Haram. I often get comments, but tend to walk away. But it does make trying to get better images a challenge as I try to sneakily shoot and run! it appears the men are not hassled…as though it is OK for them to take pictures, but not for ladies! :) Like so many other things in this society.
Dear T, will endevour to post more from the window, even though the limitations are as above.
The Masjid is very beautiful Dear Farhanah. And so nice to pray on new carpet! And I was impressed with the effort of the sister on duty in maintaining that mothers with children remain in one half of the prayer area.
Insha’Allah you will soon be here to visit yourself, Dear Brother Ikramuddin! You must be getting very excited! We will miss you in this comment section, and look forward to hearing of your experiences, Insha’Allah.
    Wassalamu alaikum

  8. Assalamualaikum and jazakiAllah kheir for this post and for maintaining this blog! I can’t help but ask that you add me to your list too… :) You’re in mine. Love

  9. Wa ‘alaikumus Salam Dear Umm-e-Shiraaz and family, especially your mother! Made extra mention of your request last night at midnight, along with Dear Zed’s words…
actually Dear Zenab you have been on the ‘list’ since your first comment in January. I tend to automatically include those who comment on the ever growing ‘list’. SubhanAllah that Allah Ta’ala hears us all not matter where we are or what language we praise and beg in. Being among the thousands in and around Haram is made even more awesome when one ponders on all the requests being heard simultaneously. May we have the grace and humility to accept what Ha Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has decreed for us, Ameen.
    Wassalamu alaikum
