prepared?? [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 8:40 pm

Preparing for the Day of Judgement: a brilliant slender volume, brimming with wisdom, has so generously been added to my library. A huge JazakumuLlahu khairan to the giver.

Penned by ‘Abul Fadl Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn Ali al-Kannani al-Asqalani, better known by the name of Imam Ibn Hajar, who was born in Cairo in 773/1372.

‘This book is a compilation of some of the wise sayings of the Prophet (pbuh), the companions, and of the pious predecessors and ascetics.

Reflecting on these wise sayings and heeding these counsels will assist in infusing us with the requisite awareness and fervour to prepare for the Day of Judgement.

We are all in need of such counsel, for our Day of Judgement begins not when the world ends, but when our life comes to an end - which is indeed imminent - as the Prophet (pbuh) stated.’

The nine chapters are divided into ‘counsels’ according to the number of advises included in each counsel: from Counsel in Twos to Counsel in Tens. The link above shares a selection from Threes, while I will share some that have pierced my heart, from Counsel in Fives. Insha’Allah in the future I will post others that may ripple responses for us to be more serious with our preparation.

“The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “There will come a time for my ummah when they will love five things and forget five things. They will love this life (dunya) and forget the life to come; they will love property and forget the grave; they will love wealth and forget the [Day of] Judgement; they will love their children and forget the truth; and they will love themselves and forget Allah. They have nothing to do with me and I have nothing to do with them.”

The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “Allah does not give someone five things until He has prepared another five things for them. He does not give him gratitude except that He has prepared for him an increase [in provision and sustenance], He does not give him supplication (du’a) except that He has prepared its award; He does not give him the asking for forgiveness (istighfar) except that He has prepared for him forgiveness; He does not give him the asking for repentance except that He has prepared for him acceptance; and He does not give him charity except that He has prepared for him its reward.”

Abu Bakr as-Saddiq Radhiallahu anhu said, “Darkness is of five types and its lamps are five. Love of the dunya is a darkness and its lamp is God-consciousness; sins are a darkness and their lamp is repentance; the grave is a darkness and its lamp is: ‘There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’; the Hereafter is a darkness and its lamp is right actions; and the path is a darkness and its lamp is certitude.”

Umar Radhiallahu anhu said, “If it were not claiming to know the unseen, I would bear witness that these five types of people will surely be from the people of Paradise. The poor man who has to support a large family; the wife whose husband is please with her; the woman who gives her dowry to her husband, considering it an act of charity; the one whose parents are pleased with him; and the one who repents from sins.”

Ali Radhiallahu anhu said, “Were it not for five things all of mankind would have been righteous. Contentment with ignorance, covetousness over this world (dunya), miserliness over what is surplus, insincerity in actions, and conceit over one’s opinion.”

Yahya ibn Mu’ath al-Razi said, “He whose appetite increases, his corpulence will increase; he whose corpulence increases, his desires will increase; he whose desires increase his sins will increase; he whose sins increase, the hardness of his heart will increase; and he whose heart becomes hard will drown in the pitfalls of the dunya and its attractions.”

Sufyan al-Thawri said, “The poor have chosen five things and the rich have chosen five others. The poor have chosen sincerity of the soul, freedom from worries, worship of the Lord, ease of accountability, and the highest position. The rich have chosen weariness of the soul, preoccupation with worries, worship of the dunya, severity in accountability, and the lowest position.”

A sage said, “There are five obstacles to attaining God-consciousness (taqwa), and only the one who overcomes these five will attain it. Choosing hardship over ease, exertion over rest, lowliness over pride, silence over idle talk, and death over life.”

The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “In the gathering of wealth there are five [blameworthy] things, wearing oneself out in gathering it; neglecting the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah in preserving it; fear of robbers and thieves; being labeled a miser on account of it; and leaving the company of the righteous due to it. In distributing one’s wealth to the poor there are five [praiseworthy] things, ease of mind due to abandoning its amassing; having time to remember Allah rather than the worrying about preserving it; safety from robbers and thieves; gaining the title of ‘generous’; and accompanying the righteous due to leaving it behind.”

Sufyan al-Thawri said, “No one in this age amasses wealth except that he has five traits, the delusion that his lifespan will be long, overpowering greed, intense miserliness, lack of piety, and forgetfulness of the Hereafter.”

Muhammad ibn al-Duri said, “The damnation of Iblis was due to five things, he did not acknowledge his sin, he did not regret it, he did not blame himself, he did not resolve to repent, and he lost hope in the mercy of Allah. The salvation of Adam was due to five things, he acknowledged his sins, he regretted it, he blamed himself, he hastened to repent, and he did not lose hope in the mercy of Allah.”

Shaqiq al-Balkhi said, “Five precepts are obligatory upon you, so practice them: worship Allah to the extent that you need Him; take from the dunya to the extent of your stay in it; disobey Allah to the extent you can bear His punishment; prepare provisions during the dunya to the extent of your stay in the grave; and work for Paradise to the extent of your desired rank in it.”

Umar Radhiallahu anhu said, “I have seen all types of friends but I have never found a better friend than safeguarding the tongue; I have seen all types of clothes but I have never found clothes better than God-consciousness; I have seen all types of wealth but I have never found wealth better than contentment; I have seen all types of good deeds but I have never found a good deed better than giving good advice; I have seen all types of food and I never found food more delicious than patience.”

The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “There will come a time for my ummah when they will love five things and forget five others, they will love this dunya and forget the next world; they will love life and forget death; they will love palaces and forget the grave; they will love wealth and forget the [Day of] Account; and they will love creatures and forget the Creator.”

Yahya ibn Mu’ath al-Razi said in his entreaties and supplication, “O my Lord! The night is only pleasant to me when I supplicate to You; the day is only pleasant to me when I obey You; this world is only pleasant to me when I remember You; the Hereafter will only be pleasant to me if I receive Your pardon; and Paradise will only be pleasant to me if I see You.”

Juma’ah, the Scent of Paradise [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 9:01 pm

The Messenger of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: ‘Jibreel Alaihis Salam came to me and in his hand was like a clear white mirror with a black spot in it.’

I said, ‘Jibreel, what is this?’

He said, ‘This is Friday’

I said, ‘What about Friday?’

He said, ‘There is goodness for you in it.’

I said, ‘What do we have on it?’

He said, ‘It is a happy day for you and for your people after you.’

I said, ‘What do we have on it?

He said, ‘There is an hour on that day in which if any Muslim servant asks Allah Ta’ala for anything in this world or the Hereafter and it is decreed for him, Allah Ta’ala will answer him. Or if it is not decreed for him, Allah Ta’ala will save something better for him. Or if he seeks Allah Ta’ala’s refuge from evil that is destined to him, Allah Ta’ala will take some worse evil away from him.’

I said, ‘What is this black spot in it?’

He said, ‘It is the Day of Resurrection and it will occur on a Friday. For us it is the superior of all days and on the Day of Resurrection, we call it The Day of Excess.’

I said, ‘Why?’

He said, ‘Because Your Lord the Exalted and Blessed took in Paradise a valley of white musk. On Friday, He the Almighty descends from ‘Iliyun on His Kursi. Then He surrounds the Kursi with pulpits of light, and then He salutes the Prophets till they sit on them. Afterwards, He surrounds the pulpits with golden seats, then the true believers and the martyrs come and sit on them. The people of the chambers descend to sit on those grains of aromatic musk.

Then their Lord, the Exalted and Blessed, shows Himself to them and says, ‘Ask for anything and I will give it to you.’

They ask for His satisfaction.

He then says, ‘My satisfaction with you is that I make you dwell in My Place and grant you My Grace. Ask Me and I will give it to you.’

They ask Him for His satisfaction and He announces that He is pleased with them. They will have opened for them equal to their worship on Friday what an eye never saw and an ear never heard of and what a human heart never thought of. Then Allah Ta’ala ascends followed by the Messengers. The true believers and martyrs ascend and the people of the chambers return to their chambers, which are white pearls free of defects or cracks, or red pearls or green chrysolite wherein are rooms and doors. Attached to them are rivers continuously flowing and fruits are hanging down. The need of that day is only to look more at their Lord and they get more of His Honour.’ (ibn Abi Shibah)

When the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi was asked why Friday was called Juma’ah he said, ‘It was called Juma’ah because Adam was brought together (created) on that day. [Juma’ah is from the same root as the word meaning ‘brought together’.]

Allah Ta’ala’s messeneger SallAllahu alaihiwasllam said, ‘Why was it called Juma’ah?’ because on it was formed the mud of your father and on it are the Blast, the Resurrection and the Impact, and on it will be the last three hours, one of which will be an hour that Allah Ta’ala will answer the one who prays to Him in it.’ (Ahmad)

The Truthful Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, ‘There is an hour on Friday that no believing servant witnesses praying and asking Allah Ta’ala for anything but Allah Ta’ala answers him.’ He was asked, ‘Which hour is it, Oh Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘The hour between Asr prayer and sunset.’ (Al-Hakim)

He SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, ‘The best day on which the sun ever rose is Firday. Adam was created on it, entered into the Garden on it and taken out from it, forgiven and died on it. On Friday will be the Hour. All creatures wake up on Friday afraid till the sun rises for fear of Resurrectionexcept the son of Adam. On Friday is an hour that no good servant witnesses while praying and asks Allah Ta’ala for anything but He grants it to him.’ (Malik and Abu Dawud, Ahmad and Al-Hakim)

Juma’ah, witnesses and changes [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 8:27 pm

We constantly have seven witnesses to all we do, regardless of the quality of our actions. These seven will testify for or against us in the Divine Court.

The Noble Angels

And the Angels also bear witness…. (4:166)

The ground you walk on.

And man cries: ‘What’s the matter with her?’

That day she will tell her news.   (99:3-4)

The time you spend.

By the Time  (103:1)

The words you utter.

On the day when their tongues shall testify against them….(24:24)

All the organs of your body.

Today We set a seal on their mouths, but their hands shall speak to Us, and their feet bear witness to what they have been acquiring.   (36:65)

The Noble Recording Angels assigned to you personally.

But over you there are guardians watching,

Noble recorders,

Who know what you are doing.   (82:10-12)

The record of your deeds.

Allah, the Exalted Himself observes all that we do or say:

Allah is Witness to all that you do.  (3:98)

Allah is Observant of His servants.   (3:20)

With the dramatic changes to architecture and facilities over the centuries, what will this ground bear witness to this Juma’ah as thousands of the faithful flock to Masjid an-Nabawi?
Maybe the meticulous skills and efforts of all who contribute to the ongoing improvements, air conditioning, additional shade…

…plush nearby accommodation…

…new smooth marbled courtyards….

….mechanical cleaners….

….convenient underground parking…

….extra modern amenities in progress….all for the comfort of worshippers, and in readiness for the Ramadhan influx, Alhumdulillah.
(photos of the newly opened section of the eastern extension, being about a quarter of the entire area. It appears that there are no light pillars installed, so maybe this part will not be under the shade of umbrellas. The walkway accessing Jannatul Baqi and the southern side is still closed)

Insha’Allah, may we all be more mindful of these seven witnesses this Juma’ah, with each recording benefit for one and all, Ameen.

10 things I like this juma’ah [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 4:28 pm

Ten things I love this Juma’ah:

1.      The heady fragrance of Oud hanging in the air.

2.      Reciting 80 times after Asr Salat on Juma’ah, knowing that Allah Ta’ala promises to forgive 80 years of sins and bestows 80 years of good deeds. This was related by Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu after hearing it from the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.

Allahumma salli ala Muhammadini’n nabiyyi’l ummiyyi wa ‘ala alihi wa sallim taslima

"O Allah, bestow your blessings upon the unlettered Prophet and upon his family; and bestow your Mercy upon him and his family."

3.      Receiving the following email from a dear sister, JazakiLlahu khairan!

`Abdullah ibn Rawahah (RAA), whenever he met one of the Companions of the Prophet (salallahu ‘alayhi wasallam), used to say, "Come, let us believe in our Lord for a while." When the Prophet (salallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) heard about this, he said, "May Allah have mercy on Ibn Rawahah, for he loves the gatherings that the angels feel proud to attend."

Let us sit down and believe for a while…

In the dappled sunlight of this June afternoon

Amongst the swaying leaves and the violet bloom

I promise not to ramble on about economic pacts

I will not bore you with depressing trade facts

And partake neither in vain babble nor pretension-

But instead marvel at the exquisite surface tension,

Of a single drop of tender dew

Serenely dripping into view.

.

Sunlight plays delicately on the Noor and grace

That illuminate your gentle face

Oh my friend, let us sit down and believe for a while

Lest we stray towards the less worthwhile

Pursuits and pleasures and lofty attitudes

And conceits and egos of great altitudes-

I would rather be inspired by this beleaguered ant,

Resolutely forging towards the garden plants!

(A noble ant, whether it can make it or it can’t).

.

My friend, let us sit down and believe for a while-

Let us pray Asr and then directly after

Deeply contemplate the nearing Hereafter

And pray and pray and sometimes ruminate

And ask for forgiveness in this humble state.

The trees will securely shade our prostrate forms

Swathed and billowing in cotton storms!

And I hope and hope, and I pray and pray

To be as securely shaded on Judgement Day.

.

My friend, let us sit down and believe for a while

Lest we get caught up in some erring lifestyle

And so do not reflect upon His creation or ponder

And idle away the afternoons in petty squander

No, let us sit down and believe for a while-

No matter what the task or worldly trial.

And may we never come to sorrow at this day’s end

That we spent in prayer with a believing friend-

For we sat down with a smile, we sat down and believed awhile.

4.       Squeezing fresh orange juice for guests.

5.       Eating ‘hadiyah’ honey dew melons.

6. Feeling a jiggly hidden deep down excitement thinking that by this time next Juma’ah I will be Down Under with family I have not seen in many years.

7. Appreciating this Beloved City of Light and Radiance even more knowing there will be a short separation.

8.  Reading from the Dalail Khayrat.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad to the extent of Your forbearance.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad to the extent of Your Knowledge.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad as many times as Your words.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad to the extent of Your favour.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad to the fullness of Your skies.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad to the fullness of Your earth.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad to the fullness of Your Throne.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad in the decoration of Your Throne.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad in all that the Pen has written in the Mother of the Book.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad as much as You have created in Your Seven Heavens.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad as much as You will create in them until the Day of Resurrection and every day a thousand times.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad in every drop of rain that has fallen from Your heavens to Your earth from the day You created the world to the Day of Resurrection and every day a thousand times.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad as many times as those who have glorified You, declared Your unity, magnified You and extolled You from the day You created the world to the Day of Resurrection and every day a thousand times.

O Allah, bless our master Muhammad in every one of their breaths and their utterances.

9.     Wrapping gifts. Brown paper packages all tied up with string!

10.   Finally having a few minutes to blog in days that are full of busy-ness, Alhumdulillah!

Juma’ah and Umm Adam [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 4:23 pm

Once more sharing some snippets from Umm Adam whose reflections on life with two young boys I previously posted.

~*~

The Right Way UP!

"Little Muhammad just loves reading books"

I told my friend,

As we watched him engrossed in his story,

His little face hidden by the large cover.

"Really?" she blinked.

"Has he learned anything?"

"He has learnt to hold it the right way up!" I told her happily.

Allah!

Now as I hold Your Book in my hand,

I wonder,

If I have learned to read it the right way "UP"?

~*~

Don’t Tell The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam!!

I was in a terrible fix, stuck in the middle of a war between my 4 and 2 year old Adam and Muhammad. "ZZZZZZ… rrrrrrr… Im zooming in the sky, outa my way hey you" and THUD he ran into the poor kid. He stumbled, lost his balance and tumbled onto the floor. "aaaaaaaaaay.. Aay… gggggg" He screamed angrily at his older bro, who without any remorse was turning his bike to run into him again. After getting it more than a few times, the little tyke finally had it, he looked around, found nothing (by this time you should know that I was praying, at least what I seemed to be doing, though unintentionally, my mind was fully concentrated on what was going on around me)…I heard his little feet scurrying to the store,, and my! what he got, a broom!!! shooo he swung it around like a baseball bat, Adam ducked and it hit me right on the face. I tasted the dusty hair on my tongue. ZZZZZZ.

The second I did my first salam Adam had already sprinted off. I bellowed. ADAM!! I could hear him giggling in the bedroom. "AADAAM! Come here this instance!!" My voice reverberating thru the width and length of the corridor. "Mama please don’t shout, You are disturbing me, I’m studying.." he said innocently, what a nerve! I thought for a second and called out "Come here, Story time!" And before I knew it he was sitting right in front of me. "I’ll tell you which one, the one in which ……." He went on to tell me the story I was supposed to tell him.

"Wait, wait, first things first, have you brushed your teeth? Ready for bed?"

"Yeah, and my tongue also..what is the story about mama?"

"About a little-naughty companion" I smiled into his eyes meaningfully.

"Yesss!!" He said gleefully.

"There once was a companion, you know who a companion is, don’t you?"

"Yeah, those Muslims who lived with the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam are called companions". He said impatiently, anxious to hear the story.

"Good for you! so a companion may Allah be pleased with him was asleep…"

"Mama Mama" He cut me short urgently."Remember you were worried if the AC was rumbling? It was not the AC, it was grandma snoring" He confided in me.

"Adam! What if grannie heard what you just said!! You know better than to comment on your elders. It’s rude!!…"

"She doesn’t know she snores?" he frowned incredulously.

"It doesn’t matter if she knows or not.. now.. enough of that snoring stuff. ok? So that companion May Allah be pleased with him, was taking a nap when another companion wanted to have some fun on the poor man’s expense, so he poked him gently with a stick" "Very gently, like this?" he motioned with his hand.

"Yeah, but the sleeping companion was startled out of his sleep, he sat up abruptly like this, some companions laughed at that, and guess what the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam did?"

"He hugged the sleeping companion?" he suggested quickly.

"NO, he told them that a Muslim should never startle or scare another Muslim, because we are meant to be kind and gentle with each other and should never hurt or make fun of anyone."

"So then the companions started crying?" he asked thoughtfully.

"No, why would they?" I was perplexed.

"Because they laughed first and so when…"He went on to explain his theory.

"Ooooh, That!" You always have to expect the least expected with KIDS.

"Honey, it’s not the point that they laughed or cried, well sort of,, but actually the point is that the other companion should not have startled him in the first place. Get it?"

"Hmmmm" he gazed in the space as he always did when he finally got something in his head.
"So what have we learned from this story? That we should never scare anyone AND should never run our bike into anyone. What do you think the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam would say if he learns that you scared your poor helpless kid brother and even bumped your bike into him.hmmm?

"Will he be sad then?" He asked quietly, already looking hurt..

"Why Of course, he loves his Ummah so much and he doesn’t want anyone to get hurt."

"And he won’t let me ride his horse in Jannah??" Now he is starting to think, about time.

"Well.. if you promise you will never do that again, and say sorry to your bro, everything will be alright. And the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam would still be proud of you"

"But he hit me with the broom!!" He fumed.

"Well I don’t want to have an argument at this time, you know who is right and who is wrong, think it over yourself and tell me how you make up your mind later, now say your prayers and go to sleep. We have to get up early for fajr, close your eyes, not a peek. Assalamu alaikum"

After some time when it was dark and quiet, he crawled up next to me "Mama are you sleeping?" He whispered.

"Hmmmm? What is it?" I drawled.

"Mama, don’t tell the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam that I’m mean to Muhammad ok?" Boy was he ever worried!

Something snapped inside. I held back the urge to kiss him. "You promise you won’t be unkind to him again?"

"I’m not sure actually but I will try" Now he was using my words against me… a naughty smile spreading across his cheeks. "Ok mama, deal?" He was anxious to clear up the matter before somebody delivered it to his dear Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.

I thought for a second and smiled "Deal, now close your eyes". I watched him go to sleep grinning ear to ear, maybe already riding his camel in Jannah.

Something was bothering me inside. I gazed out the window…the wind was howling thru the trees… a grasshopper was singing constantly….the moon was bright. Everything was quiet…. so noisily quiet. Somewhere far away in the desert, a man was crying…. he was 14 centuries far away and and yet… he felt so close…. his tears so real. I could feel his heart beating with sincerity and concern for the whole humanity and especially for his Ummah. And as I lay listening to him pray, "ya Rabbi Ummati, O my Lord, my Ummah!" my heart ached… Ummah? "You see the believers as regards their being merciful among themselves and showing love among themselves, and being kind among themselves, resembling one body, so that, if any part of the body is not well, then the whole body shares the sleeplessness (insomnia) and fever with it" (Bukhari)"

His words echoed in my mind. Thousands of Muslims were burnt to death in Gujrat while a Muslim boy spent half an hour in front of the mirror, tending his spikes, humming to an Indian song. Ummah? … Millions of Muslims have been killed in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan and we still believe in peaceful negotiations, and mutual cultural seminars.. Ummah?. Thousands of Bosnian Muslims were killed by Serbs in ethnic cleansing a few decades back and a college girl asks me "What is Albania?" Ummah?. We felt shy to wear patched clothes like Sunnah but had no remorse to tear our jeans on the knees to blindly follow western fashion. Ummah? And today my friend calls to tell me that her aunt, a mother with 2 kids was maimed and burned to death in Islamabad Cantt. Ummah??

I wish I could say to my Mom " Mother, don’t tell the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam how wretched an Ummah we have become." and sleep with a smile on my face.

Juma’ah desert picnic [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 4:50 pm

Just back from a post Juma’ah picnic to the desert, having raced into Al Baik for supplies! Apologies for the brevity of my presence these days. Right now a race to post this while it is still Juma’ah here. I seem to be racing against weeks of an erratic connection, trying to rush to do things when it allows, and racing against an AC that has a habit of not being user friendly after a few minutes. Temperatures now reaching the 40 mark…add some more when in the desert….

…a country style minaret…speakers positioned to call the date farm workers to Salat…to success…

….these ships of the desert calmly showing no signs of racing for anything…

….’ships’ (because Arabs do not pronounce ‘ch’) of a different kind…with crumbed prawns….yum!!! I lasted a few minutes in the shade before retreating to inside the car with the AC on full…

….such magnificent creatures that thrive in the scorching heat…

…playing peek a boo as she looks for a tasty prickly thorn for her picnic…

…while this pair enjoy a dust bath….

….lush bounties from Allah Ta’ala….

…if this is how they are here in this existence….imagine how they will be in Jannah!!!!!!!!!!! Insha’Allah where our picnics will be in the shade of Rahmah whilst drinking beside Al-Kawthar from goblets of gold and silver, served by our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, Ameen Ameen Ameen.

Juma’ah and giants [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 7:29 pm

Masjid Nabawi with the capacity to accommodate more than 250,000 faithful worshipers inside is always full for Juma’ah regardless of the time of the year. And for many months even the courtyard is overflowing bringing the total to close to the million mark, SubhanAllah. Insha’Allah, once the completion of the outdoor umbrella project along with the new eastern expansion is complete the numbers will increase even more.

I tried to find what the population was during the Caliphate of al-Farooq ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab RadhiAllahu anhu but after many hours of searching could not locate such information. Do share with us if you know of such figures.

‘Umar ibn al-Khattab RadhiAllahu anhu was a leader who guided by word and deed, whose life was an inspiration in faith, motivation and correct understanding of Islam. His disposition is one of the storehouses of the Ummah’s treasures; a paragon of virtues as taught to him through our Beloved Prophet Sallahu alaihiu wasallam.

History has recorded the following khutbah by ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab RadhiAllahu anhu:

‘O people, some greed is poverty and some despair is richness. You amass that which you do not consume and you hope for that which you can never have. You have been given a respite in this world. At the time of the Messenger of Allah Ta’ala you were checked by the means of the Wahy (revelation) and whoever hid something was brought to account and whoever did something openly was brought to account. Show us the best of your behavior, and Allah Ta’ala knows what is in your hearts. If someone shows us one thing but claims that he is good in his heart, we will not believe him. If he shows us that he is outwardly good, we will think well of him. Remember that stinginess is one of the branches of hypocrisy, so spend, it is better for you.

…And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be successful.  (59:9)

O people, pay attention to the Hereafter and set your affairs straight; fear Allah your Lord, and do not dress your women in qubati garments, for although they are not see-through, they still show the shape. O people, I wish that I would be saved by a small margin, and I hope that if I live among you for a short time or a long time, I will do the right thing by you, Insha’Allah, so that each of the Muslims will continue to receive his right and his share of the wealth of Allah Ta’ala even if he stays in his house. Take care of the wealth that Allah Ta’ala has bestowed upon you. A little provision acquired with kindness is better than a lot acquired through violence. Being killed is a way of death that could befall righteous and evildoers alike, and the martyr is the one who devotes himself for the sake of Allah Ta’ala. If any one of you wants to acquire a camel, let him choose one that is tall and big and strike it with a stick; if it does not flinch then let him buy it.’

Such universal words of wisdom. True richness is being content while true poverty comes with greed. And the basis of contentment is showing no interest in what other people have. Insha’allah we will be content if we practice this; whoever is content with what he has in indeed rich even if he is poor. While the one controlled by greed looking to what others have is poor, even if he has wealth because his wealth is not making him feel independent. Richness is richness of the heart, and common sense dictates that a person should not acquire more than he needs of his worldly wealth, and his worldly ambitions should not be attached to that which he does not possess; he should regard this world as something transient and not be deceived by its attractions and temptations, Insha’Allah.

‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu used to check on the wives of the Prophet SallAhu alaihi wasallam and give generously to them. He would not eat any fine food of fruit without sending some of it to the wives of the Prophet SallAhu alaihi wasallam; the last one to whom he would send anything was Hafsah RadhiAllahu anha, his daughter, and if there was any shortfall, she would be the one whose share would be affected.

He also used to send their stipend to them, and the following is an account which took place with the Mothers of the Believers, Zaynab bint Jahsh RadhiAllahu anha. When ‘Umar had calculated the shares of the Muslims, he sent Zaynab bint Jahsh RadhiAllahu anha her share, which upon receiving it said: “May Allah forgive ‘Umar; my sisters are better able to handle a share like that than me.” They said, “This is all for you.” She said, “SubhanAllah” as she hid from behind a curtain saying, “Put it down and cover it with a cloak.” Then saying to Barzah bint Rafi RadhiAllahu anha: “Put your hand in and take a handful, and give it to Banu so and so (who were among her relatives and orphans).” She shared it out until there was a little left under the cloak, then Barzah RadhiAllahu anha said: “May Allah forgive you, O Mother of the Believers, by Allah we have a right to that.” She said, “You may have whatever is beneath this cloak.” She lifted up the cloak and found eighty-five dirhams. The she raised her hands towards heaven and said: “O Allah!, do not let me live until the next time ‘Umar distributes shares.” Then she dies, and she was the first of the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam’s wives to join him, may Allah Ta’ala be pleased with her and all the Sahabah RadhiAllahu anhum, Ameen.

May your Juma’ah be blessed with the aura of these giants from our past history, with lessons floating to the depths of the hearts that in turn infuses deeds with the same shining brilliant lights they emitted, Ameen.

Juma’ah images [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 9:45 pm

Musa was desirous to see Allah

But Allah was desirous to see you.

How can Tur Sina compare to Miraj?

How can earth compare to the heavens?

How can Yusuf’s beauty compare to yours?

He was the beloved of Zulaikha, you are the beloved of Allah.

Veiled in the secret of humanity is your flawless beauty

Unknown to all that you are part of the beauty of Allah.

Prophets and Angels cannot claim the same nearness as you.

You are the beloved of Allah, the Proud.

Everyone else is an outsider.

Many a times the moon has tried to rival your beauty.

But never could it present splendor close to yours.

How can I boast affiliation to you?

I am as unclean as you are pure and chaste.

I would not be surprised if for your sake

The sins of your nation are counted as acts of obedience.

The crimes of your nation are considered so precious,

The least of your nation be showered with a thousand blessings.

Depending on your intercession my rebelliousness increased,

I am sinful, I am disobedient, but still I belong to you.

Maulana Muhammad Qasim Nanotwi.  Rahmatullahi alaihi.

Images from that blessed time between Asr and Maghrib on another blessed Juma’ah, one that we will never witness again. May we be heedful with our time, Ameen.

The haze still embracing all with a softness. The courtyard work now between Bab Baqi and the outside fence, brothers can still enter Bab Baqi as the work does not extend that far. While the area to the south, left, is still sectioned off.

Our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Du’a is the weapon of a believer, the pillar of Deen and the Nur of the heavens and the earth. SubhanAllah. Looking at the line of what normally is the the first Saff.  How much Du’a has been made here over the centuries, and how much more will be made?

The eastern courtyard extension now level with the exisiting courtyard.

Brothers lining up at the Zamzam filling station located on the north-western corner of the courtyard.

They patiently wait in orderly lines with many containers to fill.

And wheelbarrows also line up ready for work to resume in the morning.

The area in front of Bab Salam also fenced off, but access still possible.

This is the last major section on the southern side to be completed.

The black rubber matting in the foreground forms a layer under the entire courtyard giving it the feeling of walking on a suspended surface without any jarring.

A fountain on the road to Quba from Haram.

I am sinful, I am disobedient, but still I belong to you.

Juma’ah and sharing [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 6:45 pm

O Allah, bless our lord and master Muhammad as many times as those who remember him do so. O Allah, bless our lord and master Muhammad as many times as those who neglect to remember him do so.

O Allah, bless grant peace to and sanctify our master Muhammad and also his wives, the Mothers of the Believers, his descendants and the People of his House, such blessings and peace which are measureless and grant of which is incessant.

Allah’s Messenger

(May Peace and blessings be upon him)

These inadequate words, like my tears spill onto the page and evaporate,

Because no comparison to a summer’s day will do.

And what lofty name can one give to this rose when his name is Muhammad?

By gazing upon him hard, war-mongering hearts became filled with wide-eyed wonder;

When he walked amongst men he was of them but more eminent; he always appeared taller.

His bright face shone ‘more radiant than the moon’,

Those who saw him were astounded, dumbfounded.

His very presence captivated all,

The reality of his light made him a lamp for a darkened room;

A shining beacon midst iniquity.

His long-lashed eyes had an intensity in colour and were often wet with tears in prayer.

His laughter was in his light- emitting smile; a secret to be treasured for these sinful eyes.

The feel of his skin was softer than silk and more beautiful than gossamer, with its silvery tones;

His musk lingered on those touched by him.

Children flocked around him to bask in his glow

Just as we sit here to listen to his words even now;

All radiated with love for him…because of him.

Hearts leaned to him…

are leaning to him…

and will lean to him;

Because he is the perfect balance in this unbalanced world

Because his love is the a calm centre in a stormy sea

Because his walk was one with purpose;

Direction so that we can follow the hallowed footsteps he left behind.

Because if it was not for him, we would not have been created.

May infinite peace and blessings be upon Him

Even if Jannah came to take, I wouldn’t leave this street!

We’d also turn away our face, towards your wall!

Thus has the dust of Madinah made my account so complete

That the Day of Reckoning now I have no need to meet.

Before my eyes, that ocean sat, my heart is restless to prostrate

Refrain, stop your head, yes, this is a test.

Many generous and loving souls share so many moving words and images, so out of gratitude to them, and wanting to extend the sharing with all I will be posting such gifts every now and then. JazakumuLlahu khairan to those who have contributed the above two pieces, and to Surreal Soonee Sister for her dulcet reminders in Give Gifts, Grow Love. May we be more mindful of the beauty of the Sunnah of giving this Juma’ah, reaching out more than usual, as well as being more generous with our Salawaat on our Blessed Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam whose every moment was a gift to us.  Insha’Allah, may our living and our dying be on the Sunnah, and efforts made on encouraging and sharing this in others, Ameen.

Juma’ah and SHIN [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 7:04 pm

From  Hayat Al-Hayawan The Life of Animals by al-Kamal ad-Damiri

In the chapter headed by the Arabic letter Shin, he states:

“Our Shaikh, the enlightened Imam Abu ‘Abdillah ibn As’ad al-Yafi (may Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him), has informed me: ‘It has reached me, on the authority of our master, the enlightened Imam Abu ‘Abdillah al-Qurashi, on the authority of his Shaikh, Abu ‘r-Rabi alMaliqi, that the latter once said:

“’”Shall I teach you something precious, from which you can always derive benefit, and which will never be exhausted?” [Shaikh Abu ‘Abdillah said]: “Yes of course!” said I, so he told me to say:

Befriend the moon….become aware of its phases and seek the correct knowledge for determining the new moon:

http://www.crescentmoonwatch.org/

An excellent detailed dissertation from Shaykh Hamza Yusuf…

http://www.zaytuna.org/articleDetails.asp?articleID=100

This paper advances several arguments and rebuts others in an effort to prove that the only acceptable basis for determining the lunar month is the actual sighting of the dawning crescent. At the root of the problem is a failure to recognize that the crescent moon’s appearance is a legal cause (sabab) determined by God in the Qur’an and through His Prophet’s words. That being the case, no scholar in the history of Islam has ever permitted calculation in lieu of sighting until the modern era. Moreover, predicting the new moon’s visibility with absolute certainty is impossible, even by modern scientific calculations, as opposed to the degree of certainty that has been attained in predicting the astronomical new moon, which is invisible to the naked-eye. Furthermore, the ability to predict the new moon’s probable appearance has not increased greatly from premodern times. For these reasons, and others discussed in this paper, actual sighting poses difficulties in terms of the scheduling requisites created by a modern industrial or postindustrial society.

The following is a video of Shaykh Hamza Yusuf sighting the new moon of Shawwal 2006, regardless of the dateand the locality the beauty of witnessing the birth of a new moon is moving, and the message he delivers is for all time and all places:

Juma’ah and the Balance [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 9:02 pm

HOW WILL THE BALANCE TIP?

We will set up the Balances of justice for the Day of Resurrection so that no one can be wronged in the least, and if there should be even the weight of a mustard seed, We shall bring it out, We take excellent account (21:47)

He has set the Balance so that you may not exceed in the balance, weigh with justice, and do not fall short in the balance. (55:7-9)

Bukhari and Muslim narrated that the Prophet SallAllahu alahih wasllam said: “Two words which are light on the tongue but will weigh heavily in the Balance, and they are beloved to the Most Merciful: ‘SubhanAllah wa bi Hamdi, SubhanAllah il-Azeem’ (Glory and praise be to Allah, Glory be to Allah the Almighty)

And “Purity is half of faith, and saying ‘Alhumdulillah ‘(Praise be to Allah) fills the scale, and saying ‘SubhanAllah wa’l-hamduLillah ‘(Glory be to Allah and praise be to Allah) fills what is between heaven and earth.”

And “Whoever keeps a horse for the sake of Allah, out of faith in Allah and believing in His promise, its eating and drinking, its defecation and urination, will all be hasanat in his Balance on the Day of Resurrection.”

From Tirmidhi, from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas RadhiAllahu anhu who said he heard the Prophet say:  “Allah will select a man from my Ummah before all creation on the Day of Resurrection, and will spread out for him ninety-nine books of records of his deeds, each one extending as far as the eye can see. Then He will say, “Do you deny any part of this? Have My recording scribes been unjust towards you?” The man will say, “No O Lord.” Allah will say, “Yes indeed, you have Hasanat stored with Us, and there will be no injustice this Day.” And He will bring forth a piece of paper on which is written Asshadu an laa ilah ill-Allah wa asshadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah. He will say, “Weigh this.” The man will say, “O Lord, what is this piece of paper compared to all these records?” Allah will say, “You will not be wronged.” Then the records will be placed in one pan of the Balance and the piece of paper in the other; the pan with the piece of paper will weigh heavily, and nothing will outweigh the name of Allah.”

And another narration in Muslim: “The Qur’an will come forth on the Day of resurrection with its people who used to act in accordance with it. Surah al-Baqarah and Surah Aal’Imran will come forth like two clouds, or two patches of shade with light in between, or like two flocks of birds spreading their wings, defending their companions.”

Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi narrate a Hadith from Abu Darda RadhiAllahu anhu in which the Prophet SallAllahu alahih wasllam said: “Nothing will be placed in the Balance on the Day of Resurrection which will weigh more heavily than good manner and attitude.”

And it is narrated concerning Abdullah ibn Mas’ud RadhiAllahu anhu, who was a slim man with thin calves, who when it was windy he would be buffeted about causing people to laugh at him. The Messenger of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasllam asked: “What are they laughing at?” They said: “O Prophet of Allah, they are laughing at his thin calves.” He said: “by the One in Whose hand is my soul, they will weigh more heavily than Uhud in the Balance.”

How Will the Balance Tip?

Will good deeds pour as raging floods of shimmering diamonds drenching the Heavens, perfuming the already heady fragrance of Angel’s wings?

Will deliriously coated efforts of yearning for the ultimate favour of the One become hunks of lead buckling the Pan of the Scale?

Will tears, scorching eye sockets for the suffering, mutilation and horror of mankind accumulate; bursting in one huge catatonic gush, cleansing all remnants of atrocity?

Will letters that majestically multiply upon recitation, exquisitely scrolled and dotted by the Ruby Pen, pile so high they spontaneously combust, vaporous scents floating towards the Arsh?

Will the selfless serving of others match Umar’s carrying sacks of flour to the needy in the Madian dark secret of nights?

Will the slavish obedience to The Commands be so illumed they ignite, eclipsing all gloom with glitter?

Will movements of the tongue drunk with praise and adoration for the Prince of Peace shiver tremulously obliterating all but Him and His Habib?

Will cries of repentance be so copious and sincere creating rivers to snuff Jahannam?

Will gratitude for belonging to the Al-Mustafa’s Ummah crash and tumble, thundering and vibrating the remains of existence?

Will lust for the bliss of Jannah ecstatically bubble ephemerally wafting across the Seven Heavens?

Will diligence, determination and steadfastness spill over filling the harmonic spaces between prostrating Creations of Light?

Will sincerity be weighed as a golden opalescent glow obliterating galactic matter?

Will the heart be rejoicing in the knowledge that it belonged to a kind person the Noble Prophet will be yearning to meet on Yaum ul Qiyamah, more than the yearning to meet him SallAllahu alaihi wasallam?

How will the Balance tip if it were this Juma’ah?

JUMA’AH MUBARAK!

All good is from Allah Ta’ala whereas mistakes are from this humble speck. May Allah Ta’ala Bless all readers, bringing you all closer to Him and His Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. May He accept our humble efforts and grant us the capacity to be good and do good. Ameen.

Juma’ah and begging [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 9:09 pm

There is no creature that moves on the earth that Allah has not provided with sustenance.

(11:6)

Juma’ah, such a Mubarak day for begging! The day when our begging through Du’a is accepted.

We beg of Allah Ta’ala because only He can give. He Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala who is not answerable to anyone, but everyone is answerable to Him. His is the dominion over everything, while nothing can overpower Him. His is the infinite knowledge, while ours is infinitesimal. He is the Lord, we the beggars. Our begging may be rewarded here, or awaiting us in the Hereafter, or we may be the recipients of something greater than what we have begged for.

Our Beloved Mustafa SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, the best of mankind, the best of beggars, his pleading in Du’a reflected a total reliance and submission to Allah Ta’ala, the Giver, the Listener, the Bounteous, the Conferer, the Sustainer, the Bestower, the Just, the Kind, the Magnificent.

“O Allah! You hear me and see me and know everything that I reveal or conceal. None of my affairs is hidden from You. I am a person in distress, a needy person, a beggar, a fearful person. I confess my short comings. I entreat You like a humble needy person. I beseech you like a sinful lowly person. I ask You like a person in tribulation whose neck bows before You; who cries in front of You; whose whole body trembles before You. O Allah ! Do not leave me frustrated in my  prayer , and be the Most Merciful and the Most Gracious to me. O the best of those who are beseeched! O the best of those who give!” Such moving, sublime words from our Noble Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam on the Plains of Arafat. May we too turn to Allah Ta’ala in such humility, as needy beggars, relying only on His Mercy.

Friends, a family with three children, drove from Kuwait last week for Umrah, travelling as needy beggars seeking Allah Ta’ala’s mercy and favours. They arrived in Makkah in the morning of Juma’ah and performed their Umrah.

Tariq shares his Umrah, depicting his experience of Tawaf, with the arched Safa Marwa in the background, the minbar on the left, Maqam Ibrahim to the right and fellow pilgrims circling around the Ka’abah. He experessively represents women with triangular abayas, and chose to draw the Black Stone as bright yellow. Maybe symbolic of its Mubarak significance through his innocent eyes, his pure heart sensing the Heavenly origin of this once glowing stone. SubhanAllah!

However their plans changed while walking the streets of Makkah on this Mubarak day when the armies of “beggars” are out in force accosting and assaulting the pilgrims. The children were so distressed by the experience they decided not to remain in Makkah and drove directly to Madinah after Salatul Juma’ah. The presence of these beggars has reached epidemic levels, and I deliberately mention it, so you may be aware of the problem and be able to deal with it in the most appropriate manner, whether here or in your Du’a from afar.

The authorities are trying to lessen the incidence, but feel that the problem will persist while people continue to give to these “beggars” thinking that they are destitute. But unfortunately, evidence reveals that the majority of these people, including the severely deformed ones all belong to “gangs”, who are fleecing unsuspecting pilgrims of millions. Some of the stories are horrific where parents “rent” their deformed offspring out to the gang leaders, or cases where the parents deliberately maim their children to ensure an income, or threaten their young children with beatings and denial of food if they do not return each day with so much money. Hundreds of children have been rescued from such abuse, some as young as three and four.

And then there are the scams! Beware! They are ingenious, and before one realizes you are tricked and robbed, or tricked into giving. As harsh as it may sound, the advice is not to respond to any pitiful drama being played out where someone fakes having been robbed, or pretends to be in distress and needs to use your cell phone…it will be snatched in seconds, or who pretends to be so desperate that they offer to sell you the latest model cell phone for a few hundred riyals….and with such sleight of hand exchange it for an empty replica while you are distracted getting your money for such a “bargain”. Or, more a warning for sisters, while in the Saff and praying Fardh, gangs of children run along grabbing handbags.

Our Beloved Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam referred to begging many times in his teachings:

Samurah ibn Jundab RadhiAllahu anhu related that the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: Begging is an injury that someone inflicts upon his own face, except in the case of asking a ruler or asking for something when one is in extreme need.

Thu’ban RadhiAllahu anhu reported: When the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “I will guarantee Paradise for the person who gives me guarantee that he will never ask anyone for anything,” I gave this promise to the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam and I never asked anyone for anything after that.

Abu Kabsha al-Anmari RadhiAllahu anhu reported that the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said: be the One in whose hand my soul is, had I been an oath taker, I would have taken oaths about three things: one, no wealth diminishes because of charity, two, no man pardons an oppressor, seeking the pleasure of Allah, without Allah increasing his honour on the Day of Judgement and three, no one opens the door of begging for himself without also opening the door of poverty for himself.

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu: I heard Allah’s Apostle SallAllahu alaihi wasallam while he was on the pulpit speaking about charity, to abstain from asking others for some financial help and about begging others, saying, "The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is that of the giver and the lower hand is that of the beggar."

Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu’ba RadhiAllahu anhu: The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, "Allah has forbidden for you, (1) to be undutiful to your mothers, (2) to bury your daughters alive, (3) to not to pay the rights of the others (e.g. charity, etc.) and (4) to beg of men begging. And Allah has hated for you (1) vain, useless talk, or that you talk too much about others, (2) to ask too many questions, and (3) to waste the wealth by being extravagant.

And know that he who refrains from begging others, Allah will make him contented and not in need of others; and he who remains patient, Allah will bestow patience upon him, and he who is satisfied with what he has, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And there is no gift better and vast that you may be given than patience.

Yasmeen’s delighful Madinah! Interesting how little one’s spatial relationships and sizes are represented. The family stayed in a hotel in front of the Green Dome and they were on the seventh floor…very high for a young child’s experience. So here we see the colourful hotel, taller than and above the Green Dome, while the child with her Hijab, and the mother "shrouded" in a black abaya are as big as the door to Masjid Nabawi! Children’s drawings are exquisite with such spontaneity.

The presence of beggars in this City of Radiance and Light is far less than Makkah, and rarely does one see the deformed ones, however they are here with a more subtle style, especially women who suddenly appear at your side, hand outstretched, or as I have experienced, the ones trying to trick you into giving over your cell phone on the pretext of some sob story.

I am not saying do not give, but be aware and be selective. There are thousands of workers here on such miserly wages, working long honest hours in the hot sun, or are cleaning the Haramain for our comfort. These are deserving of our sadaqah, Insha’Allah.

The following are links to various archival articles addressing the beggar issue here.

There is no creature that moves on the earth that Allah has not provided with sustenance.

(11:6)

May our begging be as our Beloved Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam begged:  "I am a person in distress, a needy person, a beggar, a fearful person. I confess my short comings."

Ameen.

Juma’ah and miswak [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 9:22 pm

“O Muslims! Allah Most High has made this day a day of Eid. So have a bath on this day, whoever has perfume should apply it, and use the miswak." (Ibn Majah)

…..and use MISWAK

Salvadora persica, or Arak, is the gnarled scrubby tree most commonly used for Miswak. Other types of wood that are suitable are the Peelo, Bitam Zaitun, Walnut, and any bitter variety, but not the poisonous wood of Pomegranate, Bamboo, Raihan or Chambelie. Both the twigs and the flexible roots can be used for the Miswak. It truly is a miracle brush.

It is a long held tradition for brothers patiently sitting at strategic positions selling Miswak outside the Haramain. The art of displaying and preparing the various types having been handed down from father to son for generations. The best type is called Hanash, which is usually wrapped in brown paper to maintain its freshness, and one needs to ask to inspect the pungent lengths for the prime pieces. They can be purchased as one long piece, or cut to your required length by the brother. Many of the locals buy large quantities when they discover some of good quality and freeze it, ensuring its freshness for even months later. it is not advised to buy the pre-packaged bundles, which are often dry and brittle and often moldy from the inside as they are often soaked in water to try and maintain their freshness, but this is not conducive for the best Miswak. The best option for those who want to purchase good Miswak to take back to their home countries are the individually vacuum packed ones, available in boxes as well as in assorted flavours, which some people prefer. There are now numerous competitive online companies dealing in Miswak and its offshoot products.

  •         It is one of the practices of the Ambiyyah, from the time of Adam Alihis Sallam
  •        It purifies the mouth
  •         It is a pleasure for our Creator, Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala
  •         It increases the reward of Salat, some narrations say from seventy times, up to four hundred times, and Allah Ta’ala knows best

  •         Jibreel Alaihis Sallam exhorted the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam to use it regularly, so much so that he feared that its use would be decreed obligatory the Ummah. Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam would have made using miswak compulsory but feared it would be a hardship on his Ummah. He SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said to Aishah Ummul Mu’minin RadhiAllahu anha that Miswak is a Sunnah for you and Fardh for me.

Times when our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam used Miswak:

  •         When reciting the Qur’an and Hadith
  •         When the mouth emits an odour
  •         For teaching or learning the virtues of the Deen
  •          When engaged in Dhikrullah
  •         After entering one’s home
  •        Before entering a Deeni gathering
  •         When experiencing pangs of hunger or thirst
  •         After the signs of death are eveident
  •          At the time of Sehri
  •         Before meals
  •          Before embarking on a journey, and upon returning from a journey
  •          Before sleeping
  •          Upon waking

Adab of Miswak:

  • The Miswak ideally is a straight twig devoid of roughness.
  • It should not be used while lying down
  • The length of the Miswak to be no longer than a span, that is the maximum distance between tips of the thumb and the little finger, and the thickness of the forefinger
  • When using the Miswak hold it in such a way that the thumb and the little finger are under the stick, while the remaining fingers are above it.
  • Place the Miswak vertically, the brush end uppermost, when not in use.
  • It should be washed before use and washed after use, and not be sucked
  • Brush the upper teeth thrice with a vertical motion (not horizontal), wash the lower teeth thrice, also in a vertical motion.
  • Do not use the Miswak from both ends.

Benefits of Miswak:

  • It sharpens the memory and intelligence
  • It eliminates slime
  • It is a cure for illness
  • It creates a fragrance in the mouth
  • Strengthens the gums
  • Prevents tooth decay
  • Is a cure for headaches
  • It creates Nur on the face of the one who is constant with using it
  • It causes the teeth to glow and removes the yellow stain
  • It strengthens the eyesight
  • It assists in the process of digestion
  • It clears the voice
  • It facilitates the appetite
  • It increases the eloquence of one’s speech
  • Its constant use eases the pangs of death, making it easy for the Ruh to depart from the body when its appointed time arrives
  • Its use is a factor which will earn higher ranks in Jannah
  • The Angels sing the praises of the one who uses Miswak
  • Use of Miswak displeases Shaytan
  • Use of Miswak graces one with the companionship of the Angels
  • The greatest benefit is that the habit of using Miswak is pleasing to Allah Ta’ala and was used so much by our Beloved Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.

Du’a for using Miswak:  O Allah, purify my mouth, enlighten my heart, purify my body, and make my body unlawful to the Fire.

JUMA’AH MUBARAK and happy brushing to higher and higher in Jannah! Insha’Allah. How blessed we are to be of the Ummah of Al-Mustafa SallAllahu alaihi wasallam.

Alhumdulillahi Rabbil Aalameen.

Ameen.

Juma’ah in Jannah [Juma'ah Mubarak] — almiskeenah @ 8:15 pm

JUMA’AH in JANNAH!

The Bazaar in Jannah.

14. Our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said:

“A Bazaar will be held in Jannah and the people of Jannah will visit this Bazaar every Juma’ah. And when these people enter the Bazaar, the northern breeze (Al-Mutheerah) will blow and sprinkle various perfumes on their faces and garments and this breeze will have a special effect; it will make heavenly people more beautiful than ever. After having made their round of the Bazaar, they will return to their abodes where their companions will enquire: “You have become more beautiful since you went out. What is the reason for this?” These people will reply: “By Allah, in my absence your beauty has also grown more bewitching and extremely attractive. Why is this so?”

The reason the companions who did not go to the Bazaar becoming more attractive will in all probability be the same as in the case of the heavenly people going to the Bazaar. (Muslim)

15. ‘Ali RadhiAllahu anhu reports the following tradition: “The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam

Stated that there would be a Bazaar in Paradise, but there will be no buying or selling of any kind in this Bazaar. Herein there will be nothing else except the statues of men, and should the people of Paradise happen to like a certain statue that heavenly person will enter the same state, that is, they shall be changed into the same shape and form that he likes the best.” (Tirmidhi)

16. Sai’id ibn Musiyyab RadhiAllahu anhu met Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu in the Bazaar of Madinah.  Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu said: “O Sa’id, I pray to Almighty Allah that you and I should meet in the Bazaar of Paradise, and you and I should get together there.” Upon this Sa’id RadhiAllahu anhu enquired: “Will there be a Bazaar in Jannah?” Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu replied: “Yes indeed. I was informed by the Prophet of Allah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam that when the companions of Jannah shall enter therein they shall lodge in various sections according to their deeds. Those whose deeds will be better and numerous will get better and lofty abodes. Every Juma’ah the heavenly people shall be commanded to set out from their places. On receiving the command these people shall be honoured with the vision of their Lord and that day Allah Ta’ala shall bestow upon them immense bounties of His pleasure and special blessing. Allah Almighty will hold a special court in the biggest Garden of Jannah. Various types of seats will be arranged there according to the protocol of honour and position. Some seats will be made of light; some made of pearls; some of rubies; some of emeralds; some made of gold; and some others made of silver. Each heavenly person will take his seat according to his position. The most inferior among them will be seated on mounds of musk and camphor and the wonderful thing would be that people seated on the mounds will not feel whether those seated on the chairs are superior to them in position or vice versa. For each one of the heavenly people will content in his status and will be thankful and will never aspire for a higher estate.” After this Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu states: “I submitted to the Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam, shall we have a vision of our Creator and Provider?” He SallAllahu alaihi wasallam replied: “Yes indeed, you shall see Him. Do you doubt having sighted the sun and the moon of the fourteenth night?” I submitted, “No, I do not doubt having sighted the sun and the moon of the fourteenth night.” The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam replied: “Likewise, you shall not doubt having the vision of your Creator and Provider, and there shall be none in that assembly with whom the Almighty Allah will not converse directly. They will be seated face to face with their Lord in an informal manner and there shall be no inhibitions between them. During the conversation the Lord Almighty will ask a man, “O son of so and so, dost thou remember the day when you said this and you spoke thus?” And then Allah Ta’ala shall remind him of some of his acts of breach of faith which the person had committed during his lifetime. This man will submit, “O Lord, has Thou not forgiven my sins?” Allah Ta’ala will declare, “Why, yes I have forgiven thee. You entered this state due to the vastness of My Mercy and My Generosity.” In the meantime a cloud will come and will shower such perfume that its scent will never have been smelt before. And during this shower of perfume, Allah the Almighty shall command: “Stay and reach for the thing which I had already prepared for thee and take freely of whatever you wish for.” Upon hearing this command of Allah Ta’ala we will come to a Bazaar. The Angels will be posted on all four sides of the Bazaar. We shall see in these Bazaar things unseen and unheard of before, nor will such things have entered our imagination before this time. Thereafter we shall be given our favourite things free of charge, for there shall be no trade of buying or selling in this Bazaar. The companions of Jannah will meet each other in this Bazaar. When a heavenly man of higher rank shall see a man of lower rank, neither of them will feel the difference of quality in their apparel, the superior one will have no feelings of superiority, and the inferior one will be free from distress on account of feelings of inferiority because he will have no such feelings. In my humble estimation the state of affairs seems to be that as soon as the two heavenly men meet each other the apparel of the inferior one will be made as resplendent as the superior person, so that neither the inferior one should suffer distress on the account of inferiority, nor the superior person entertain any pride of superiority. Thereafter when we reach our respective abodes our women shall see us and say: “Allah bless you! Welcome! How is it that you look so handsome? When you went forth you wer not as attractive and charming as you look now?” In the answer to this we will say: “Today we have been in the presence of Almighty Allah Ta’ala. Hence due to our presence in the company of Allah Ta’ala we have been beautified and we have returned to you in a more beautiful state.” (Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah)

Excerpt taken from this book.

O Allah send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, the one who You chose for the great intercession. When he prostrates to You, You will say to him: “Lift your head and ask, for you will be granted, intercede and your intercession will be accepted.” You have forbidden Paradise for all the prophets, until he enters it, and You have forbidden it to all nations until his nation enters it. May the blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, companions and his wives to the extent of Allah’s pleasure and his pleasure.  (From The Key to Arriving at the Door of the Messenger, Shaykh Muhammad Sadiq Alawi )

May the deeds we perform this Juma’ah gain Allah Ta’ala’s Mercy and Grace.  May we all be seated, facing each other on thrones of rubies, pearls, emeralds, gold and silver, and Al-Mutheerah sprinkling us all with dust of musk, as we wander the Bazaar in Jannah every Juma’ah. And sway in ecstasy as our gaze rests on our Lord Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and we drink from the hand of our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam. Ya Rabb, Insha’Allah. Ameen Ameen Ameen.
