Home Schooling and…
According to our Islamic tradition the lap of the mother is the first Madrassah. A beautiful Hadith expounding a simple but profound image of the foundation of the child’s education. A child snuggled on the mother’s knee immersed in the blessed mercy Allah Ta’ala has bestowed upon the mother. Initially listening, feeling, smelling, seeing, touching the world around them from this unique lap of learning and interacting.
Home schooling, home education seems the logical extension of this nurturing and intimate basis for Tarbiyah, especially in these times of trial and turmoil for those who feel so inclined. I am a staunch advocate for this method of education for the future flag bearers of this glorious Deen, and deeply admire the many families I know who make the effort in accommodating the needs of their children in the home environment.
"Whatever an education is, it should make you a unique individual, not a conformist; it should furnish you with an original spirit with which to tackle the big challenges; it should allow you to find values which will be your road map through life; it should make you spiritually rich, a person who loves whatever you are doing, wherever you are, whomever you are with; it should teach you what is important, how to live and how to die." John Taylor Gatto, a prominent figure in the home schooling arena, who along with Sheikh Hamza Yusuf is one of the advisory board members of Kinza Academy, an excellent site to explore if you are interested in home education.
It seems more and more Muslim families are embracing this way as an alternative to the mainstream systems. So much is now available online offering all the various supportive areas to make home schooling a successful choice, and so many blogging on their activities, positive outcomes and posting a variety of links. (A few sites that will lead you on an inspiring journey of discovery 1, 2, 3, 4, and two audios on Classical Education for Muslim Children by Mustafa Styer 5, 6 )
Apart from the religious and academic side of the curricula, the creative, fun times need a time and place too, offering a happy balance and an expressive outlet for the mind. Using recycled bits and pieces teaches a respect for materials and the environment whilst at the same time provides an array of stimulating activities, and an alternative to mass produced toys, giving young ones the opportunity to engage in artistic and engineering concepts. I was recently asked for some advice with the two following rather ‘eccentric’ outcomes, combining recycling of common objects and card with a dash of jollity with words. And even if you are not home schooling time spent with your little, and not so little ones crafting and designing makes for a happy and loving family.
ZANY ZOO

Whacky woo
welcome to my zany zoo
are you a zebra or a gnu?
please tell me who
a-r-e y-o-u?
I am far from true
but don’t be blue
I am merely paper pegs n glue
without a shoe
but who plays on cue
all fun games anew.
And this is bug
who is always snug
as he lives on a rug
he likes to tug
the bathroom plug
to remove the glug
he drinks from a jug
not a mug
and gives the best squeezy hug.
And here is bubbly guinea pig
she wears a fancy spiky wig
as she dances a jazzy jig
on a huge plump purple fig
hanging from a twig
which is not very big.
but she is happy to dig
while singing ig ig ig…. ig ig ig.
Here is dippy dinosaur
he does not have a claw
or a paw
but can open a door
with his mighty roar
he knows funny tricks galore
while flying high to soar
giggling and shouting more more more
These zany riddles we adore
please add more for an encore
you as sure to guffaw
and it is not against the law
as we are not humour poor.
So go and make a zany zoo
take some time to be wacky woo
thanking AllaHU
for all He has blessed you to do.

MR DINGLE DANGLE JANGLE

Bounce me up and down
I will never frown
Throw me on the floor
I will beg for more and more
Float me in the bath
For a jolly good laarrrfff
Dangle me in the air
Or sit me on a chair
Hang me from a tree
Or use me as a tasbee
Learn all my bright colours
Then teach them to others
Give me a tap and I will spin
Sure to make you giggle and grin
Madly shake me all about
You may even hear me shout
Wriggle me from side to side
So all aboard for a ride.
As we giggle and go he he he
Don’t forget to say ALHUMDULILLAHI
ALHUMDULILLAHI ALHUMDULILLAHI.
*
More from Mr Gatto for contemplation:
"Don’t cooperate with your children’s school unless the school has come to you in person to work out a meeting of the minds - on your turf not theirs. Only a desperado would blindly trust his children to a collection of untested strangers and hope for the best. Parents and school personnel are just plain adversaries. One group is trying to make a living; the other is trying to make a work of art called a family. If you allow yourself to be co-opted by flattery, seduced with worthless payoffs such as special classes or programs, intimidated by Alice in Wonderland titles and degrees, you will become the enemy within, the extension of state schooling into your own home. Shame on you if you allow that. Your job is to educate, the schoolteacher’s is to school; you work for love, the teacher for money. The interests are radically different, one an individual thing, the other a collective. You can make your own son or daughter one of a kind if you have the time and will to do so; school can only make them part of a hive, a herd or an anthill."

A BOX

O that all children should have a box….or two…..
maybe one that housed a shoe
or a tube of sticky glue.

Transformed to be a zany zoo
where cows moo
doves coo
to the distant sound of a kazoo.

A secret inn to invite friends for tea,
or sit a teddy on their knee.
A hidden corner where minds run free
Why bother with lock and key.

A playful world of dazzling colours
for sharing with aunts, cousins, friends and brothers,
and all who may drop by as others.

A box in a box in a box
for socks
or rocks.
Or even frocks.

A cottage where they can stand tall
roll a ball
or curl up small.
In their secluded magic hall.
Their own dwelling to laugh and giggle
allowed to scribble and squiggle.
Who cares how much they wriggle?

Sometimes home can be a riot
so little ones dream of quiet.
And the box; you don’t have to buy it.
It’s so much fun, please do try it!
They can retreat inside with their beads
knowing Allah loves them and fulfills their needs,
listening to all their innocent pleads
Precious hearts bursting with love seeds.

A private sanctuary where they can pray
after their active games and play.
A peaceful moment at the end of the day
I wonder what it is they say?

The whimsical WHY?
My brain is in meltdown as the temperature nudges fifty these past few days….and the AC where I sit bashing at the keyboard refuses to co operate….its brain in sympathy melt down too!
For some strange reason….this melting brain in “push mode” got me to thinking about children and their learning and how often we push their small brains too hard in our efforts to get them to understand concepts….which led me down reminiscing lane to when I used to spend some time with children in “play mode” as they grappled with the skills of word recognition and reading. Discovering the enchanting world of DIPHTHONGS….the word alone sounding like a surrealistic planet far away….and all the nuances that go with this may as well be from another planet. There were many WHY’s, and sweet confused wrinkled brows over all the “WH” words…..Why is it pronounced like this…but looks like that….Why are the letters different but sound the same….Why are the letters the same but sound different…..WHY WHY WHY??
The following nonsensical, whimsical words grew out of these precious times…as well as fun loving children with great imaginations, creative lateral thinkers…and avid readers. Invent some more with your little…and maybe not-so little ones……
The moon like a balloon
Made me swoon.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The fly in the sky
Wanted to cry.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The flea on my knee
Went for a spree.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The fox in the box
Lost his sox.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The bug in the jug
Gave me a hug.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The jar in the car
Hit a bar.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The ants in pants
Sang in chants
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The pip on my lip
Was about to slip.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The ball on the wall
Rolled into the hall.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The mice on the ice
Ate the rice.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The hair on the chair
Was fair.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The frog on the log
Was in the fog.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The fish on the dish
Made a swish.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The bear over there
Doesn’t care.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The sheep in the jeep
Couldn’t peep.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The llamas in pyjamas
Slipped on bananas.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The snail on the trail
Had no tail.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The boy with his toy
Drank some soy.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The girl with a curl
Loved to twirl.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The skunk in the bunk
Almost sunk.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The bun in the sun
Was having fun.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The lark in the dark
Heard a bark.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The bee in the tree
Winked at me.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The hare in the lair
Ate a pear.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The drink in the sink
Is bright pink.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
A mosquito on the go
Crunched a dorito.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The louse in the house
Befriended a mouse.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The pet in the jet
Is dripping wet.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The hen in the den
Wrote with a pen.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The chook in the book
Swung on a hook.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The duck in the truck
Got stuck.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The bell in the well
Went ding dong dell.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The Qur’an and a man
Are in a van.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
Heavenly scent in the tent
A spectacular event.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The flower in the bower
Loves a spring shower.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
The tasbeeh on my knee
Is never free.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
Because Allah says BE, BE, BE.
So we can see
How great is He.
Loving His wise decree.
He created you and me,
So let’s shout with glee,
SubhanAllahi
Wa bi hamdihi,
As Salamu alaika Blessed Nabi.

Colours dazzle and prance.
A spectacular dizzy dance,
As we rush to enhance
Ourselves with fancy dresses and pants.
Perchance
That others will glance.
Inducing a mesmerizing trance.

Fabrics and threads
Go to our heads
With orange, green, purple and reds.
Our dear Prophet said,
In your graves when you’re dead
Your clothes are white and dust is your bed.
So why not instead
Be as the Sahabah led?

May we be happy to dress,
Not to impress,
Or creating a stress,
but striving for a little less.
Thus seeking a caress
From the Only One who can bless.
Imagine how we will be,
Singing praises of glee,
As we are called “Ya Jannaty,
Enter My Garden in humility
For your Sunnah simplicity.”

Adorned in fine green silk brocade.
Jewellery of gold and silver made.
With rubies, emeralds, coral and jade.
An Eternity that will never fade.

JazakumuLlahu khairan to the students of Darul Khair Home School, for their delightful clothing designs. May they be blessed with the richest of adornments in Jannah, Ameen.

CHILDREN
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let our bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.
Kahlil Gibran
Such a wonderful message conveyed in this poem for all to take heed regarding our role towards children, the future flag bearers of this glorious Deen.
They need our love, care, respect, guidance, understanding, patience, and mercy.
They need to feel secure, confident, competent, loved, appreciated, and worthy.
They need to experience a balance between their religious duties, academic pursuits, physical activities and creative play.

A huge tent has been erected on one of the large open spaces created from the demolition of older buildings just to the south of Haram. Rows of “more of the same” markets are set up inside and out, attracting crowds over the weekend days and nights. The addition of colorful air sculptures, a trampoline area and quad bikes is a welcomed feature for children to play and explore.

The majority of families in Madinah live in apartment style buildings where they are confined indoors, many not even having access to a balcony. Some buildings have a rooftop where the smaller children may ride bikes or have a swing. Children comprise a huge percent of the population here, but there are very few parks or gardens for them to play and release their exuberant energy. Unfortunately, due to a lack of such facilities for the young ones, the courtyard around Haram during the weekend becomes their picnic ground.

The minarets of Haram on the other side of first ring road bridge.

Not many children were present at this time, the evenings being more popular, but I felt invorgated just watching these little ones. Initially hesitant and frightened on their first attempts, but then squeals of "letting go" and submitting to the experience were soon heard. A deeper lessen for us all in this!

Waiting their turn. By no means a glamourous setting, but evidence of excitement and enjoyment was there in such simplicity.
I do not know who wrote the following, but we can all take from its message.
If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy.
If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient.
If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice.
If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith.
Let our bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

The Ummah
Like scented roses on a vine,
May the Ummah’s hearts entwine.
Like dancing waves on the shore,
May the Ummah’s love grow more and more.
Like soft falling flakes of snow,
May the Ummah’s kindness be for all to know.
Like glowing moonbeams shining bright,
May the Ummah’s smiles always delight.
Like sparkling gems on a ring,
May the Ummah’s gratitude forever sing.
Like sturdy mountains standing firm,
May the Ummah from each other learn.
Like refreshing rain bringing relief,
May the Ummah’s faith be true in belief.
Like swaying trees in a gentle breeze,
May the Ummah’s sharing be to please.
Like a mirror reflection on a lake,
May the Ummah embrace for Allah’s sake.
Like the shiny marble of the Haram wall,
May the Ummah’s support be to all.
Like fragrant blossoms of the Lote Tree,
May the Ummah be companions in Eternity.
Like the harmony seen in a flock of geese,
May the Ummah’s Du’s be for peace.

May the Ummah in solidarity rally.
Like rare diamond drops of morning dew
May the Ummah’s Iman glisten anew.
Like an embroidered cloth of silk,
May the Ummah’s compassion never wilt.

May the Ummah’s sincerity always last.
May we follow the Sunnah of our Rasul

So the Ummah is beside him by his Pool.

The Night
Night time and all is still
Birds no longer trill.
All is calm and dark outside,
A quiet time for all to hide.
Stars twinkle across the sky.
While the gleaming moon rises high.
Time for us to say our prayers,
And to Allah give all our cares.
Reflecting on our book of deeds,
Begging Allah to fulfill our needs.
May we be truly sad,
For things we have done that’s bad.
Hearts with a burning love,
To be honoured with Heaven above.

Longing for the kindness of Mustafa,
Drinking with him at his Kawthar.
And as we shut our eyes
Have the hope for Allah’s prize.
To be with Him in His Garden,
Blessed and saved by His pardon.

Look up…..
Aspire, lead the way, achieve, and be proud,
Pray to Our Lord in a voice so loud.
Look up…..
There you will see stars shining bright,
A brilliant overwhelmingly positive sight.
Look up…..
See the birds flying careless and free.
O Dear Lord, give the same to me.
Look up…..
Glowing moonbeams; sunrays streaming down.
Their luminous light dispelling a frown.
Look up…..
Allah gives us but one chance.
Tongues moist with Dhikr, hearts will dance.
Look up…..
Life presents constant waves of change.
With firm Iman, danger is out of range.
Look up…..
The Heavens are amass with treasure.
Aim high striving for this endeavour.
Look up…..
Imagine love in every place.
People living in harmony and grace.
Look up…..
Live the Sunnah of Rasulullah
Success then, will never be far.
Look up…..
Allah is there listening to you plead.
Waiting to satisfy your every need.
Look up….. Look up….. Look up…..

Who hears worms wriggle in the ground?
And sees the ants crawling around?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who Wills each leaf to flutter?
And from green grass produces butter?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who controls the sun to rise?
And directs the birds in the skies?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who tells the winds to blow?
And freezes the rain to make it snow?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who created flowers to bloom?
And is the One Who can remove all gloom?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who has the wisdom to know all things?
And gave many of His creatures’ wings?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who is the Only One to bless?
And if He wants, to sometimes give less?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who has the power to make the earth shake?
And produce a massive earthquake?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who tells the waters to flood?
And chooses to nourish our blood?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who decides when we are born?
And if we will be blessed by a new morn?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
And who deems to make a drought?
And which animals to have a snout?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who says when it is time to die?
And how long in the ground we lie?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who makes the colour of a rainbow?
And the full moon to glow?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who provides all instructions for life?
And guides us to keep out of strife?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who commands the sea to foam?
And the wild animals to roam?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who wills the seasons to change?
And formed a rocky mountain range?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who causes jewels to glisten?
And our ears to listen?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who provides us with clothes to wear?
And creates everything as a pair?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who chooses who is sick and who is healthy?
And distributes loans to the poor or wealthy?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who gives us tongues to talk?
And legs with feet so we can walk?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who decrees when there is war or peace?
And decides when all horror will cease?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
Who blessed us with the Best of Creation?
And honoured us to be of his nation?
ALLAHU ALLAHU ALLAHU
SUBHANALLAHI RABBIL AALAMEEN
So surely to Allah we pray,
And only to Him we obey.
May He guide us to His Commands,
So we can truly understand,
That everything is in His hand.
And that His Way is magnificently
GRAND!
